Volkswagen rebuilt the economical XL1 into a sporty XL Sport

With many solutions, the revolutionary Volkswagen XL1 set the bar in the segment of supercars, but probably no one would dare to put a motorcycle engine under its hood and convert it into a sports car . No one, except for Volkswagen, which is currently exhibiting a creation called the XL Sport in Paris.

Its guts no longer have a two-cylinder TDI with an electric motor, but a modified V2 engine (the cylinders are 90 degrees) from the new Ducati 1199 Superleggera , which is the most powerful two-cylinder motorcycle in the world. The power output of 200 hp at 11,000 rpm and the torque of 134 Nm are certainly not surprising, as well as the truly dreamlike acceleration to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds and a maximum speed of 270 km/h , which is the best value it has ever developed car with 200 horsepower. The rear wheels are driven via a seven-speed dual-clutch DSG.

In addition to a very good engine, great dynamic parameters are also ensured by the low weight of the car , which has remained well under a ton, and exemplary aerodynamics. A total of 890 kg was achieved by using a self-supporting body with a shell structure, made primarily of carbon fiber reinforced composite. The door windows are made of polycarbonate , the upper part of the side windows is fixed to save weight and only the lower segment can be opened. The front window is made of special thin glass. The drag coefficient cx = 0.258 is not only due to the shape of the body, but also special air screens, air removal from the wheel arches, optimized lower part of the car, air ducts in the front hood, extendable rear spoiler with drive from Lamborghini Aventador and adaptive vents hot air, integrated into the rear hinged lid.

With the economical XL1, the XL Sport shares, for example, wing doors , LED diodes for daytime running lights and in the rear light strip, the absence of a radiator grille, digital exterior mirrors , slightly forward front seats and some interior elements, including the steering wheel and controls on the center console. On the contrary, the digital instrument panel and dashboard decor are completely new, on the outside it is mainly 18-inch magnesium alloy wheels (23.9 kg lighter than aluminum wheels) with 205/40 R18 front and 265/35 R18 rear tires, behind which we find carbon-ceramic brakes . The tailgate can also be opened, allowing access to the engine, gearbox and 107-litre luggage compartment.

The chassis, integrated into an extremely strong steel space frame , consists of a trapezoidal front axle with a pair of unequal-length wishbones and a pull rod suspension system, while the rear axle, also with a pair of unequal-length wishbones, uses push rod suspension. Compared to the XL1, the XL Sport study is a considerable number of millimeters larger – it is 4,291 mm long (XL1 3,888 mm), 1,847 mm wide (XL1 1,664 mm) and 1,152 mm high (XL1 1,153 mm). The wheelbase was also extended to 2424 mm (XL1 1224 mm).
