The first technical details of the new McLaren P1

About a week ago, McLaren gave a peek into the cockpit of its flagship P1 model . Almost to the day exactly after a week, the company from Woking served us the first information about the technique.

Everyone is surely interested in what is under the hood of the model. And I have to say, it really is a gem. The twin-turbocharged 3.8 eight-cylinder located in the center of the car complements the electric motor , which is directly connected to the eight-cylinder. The total output of this pair is 916 hp , the maximum torque reaches 900 Nm . This power is transmitted to the rear wheels by a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

The petrol engine itself has its basis in the M838T unit from the McLaren MP4-12C and its output is 737 hp. The maximum torque of 720 Nm is available from 4000 rpm. Compared to the version in the MP4-12C, the eight-cylinder in the P1 has improved cooling and a cast-iron block to allow an electric motor to join the eight-cylinder as well.

This is the responsibility of the McLaren Electronics division, whose goal was to create a light electric motor that would complement the classic internal combustion engine. The power of the electric assistant is 179 hp, and the maximum torque is 260 Nm.

If you were interested in the car's dynamic parameters, McLaren did not boast about them. On the contrary, we know for sure that CO2 emissions per kilometer driven will not exceed 200 g . In addition, the P1 can only drive on electricity for a distance of more than 10 km. However, so that it was not only about ecology, McLaren also used some technologies from the world of Formula 1. First of all, these are DRS (Drag Reduction System) and IPAS (Instant Power Assist System). Both are activated via buttons on the steering wheel.

The 96 kg lithium-ion battery pack (housed in the car's carbon monocoque) can be charged through the engine or via a socket. The P1 thus also becomes a plug-in hybrid .

At the moment, this is all we can tell you about the new "green" creation of McLaren. However, more information will certainly be available at the McLaren stand in Geneva , where the production P1 will be presented in its world premiere.
