Porsche is preparing a competitor to the Ferrari 458 Italia

In the future, the range of Porsche models will not only grow with sedans and SUVs , but also with sports models that will overwhelm the Italian competition in particular. One such will be a coupe with the internal designation 988 , which wants to beat the Ferrari 458 Italia or the Lamborghini Huracán.

Against them, the Germans will deploy a really powerful weapon in the form of a newly developed flat eight cylinder , which in the 988 will also receive four turbochargers! The total output of the engine with a volume of around four liters will reach the limit of 600 horsepower , which will surpass both the aforementioned two stallions from Italy and the British McLaren 650S.

There was also the possibility that the 988 would be powered by a flat six from the 911 , but since Porsche engineers believe that this unit has already reached its technological peak , they will concentrate on developing an entirely new engine. In addition to the four turbochargers, Porsche also plans to produce the same engine with fewer of them, which will make it possible to better grade its performance.

When designing the new coupe, Porsche mainly uses aluminum and composite materials , which will reduce the weight of the entire car. The big unknown is the design, which will certainly borrow some elements from the larger 918 Spyder , under which it will be placed in the menu. The premiere of the 988 is scheduled for 2017 and will be followed by new generations of the 911, Cayman and Boxster.
