Pontiac was working on a new GTO before closing!

Are you, like me, one of the fans of the Pontiac brand and still can't breathe a sigh of relief that it was discontinued in 2009? I have news for you that will only make things worse for you – Pontiac was working on the fifth generation of the powerful GTO coupe !

Bob Lutz , a world-famous petrolhead and former GM employee, told Road&Track magazine that Pontiac was working on the fifth-generation GTO coupe even before its closure in 2009. The car was to be based on the Pontiac G8 , which was a sedan based on the Australian Holden Commodore .

As the underpinnings of the Holden Commodore were used to build the Holden Coupe 60 concept in 2008 (photo in the gallery), it is speculated that the Pontiac GTO was intended to look similar to the aforementioned concept. Bob Lutz admitted that the automaker even had a life-size clay model ready.

What the new Pontiac GTO would look like and whether it would be more successful than its not very successful fourth generation from 2004 to 2006, we will never know. But it gives fans of the brand even more reason to mourn…
