Opel will return the famous Monza name to the market

Sixteen years ago, the last large Opel coupe – the Calibra model – disappeared from the world. The traditional class, which Opel occupied for many years, thus lost a strong player and a major competitor. However, now seems like a good time for Opel to revive the tradition.

This year's Frankfurt Motor Show should see a concept with the famous Monza name . It first appeared in the 1970s, only to be replaced by the aforementioned Caliber in the late 1980s. The novelty will most likely try to build on the popular concept with rear-wheel drive and a powerful gasoline engine.

According to sources from the German Auto Bild , no platform known from the European division of the GM concern will be used for these purposes. Opel is reaching overseas this time, where the Cadillac ATS sedan seems like a suitable candidate. It offers rear-wheel drive and is also ready to install a six-cylinder 3.6 , which should form the top of the engine range. Other engines should include a 2.0 gasoline four-cylinder and, of course, a diesel four-cylinder.

However, the concept of the new coupe, which we will see in Frankfurt this summer, will not offer any of the mentioned units. Under its hood will appear a plug-in hybrid W-PHEV , which stands for wireless plug-in hybrid electric car. This type of drive was first used this year in the Buick Riviera concept.

The design should further develop Opel's philosophy with low and sporty lines . The interior should instead be equipped with advanced technologies such as Apple Siri Eyes Free connectivity. At the same time, however, it should be made of light materials.

Although we will see the concept already this year, we won't see the serial form before two years from now. Among the main competitors are the Audi A5 , BMW 4 or the catchy Lexus SC .
