Mitsubishi Pajero Expedition – the way to freedom

On the occasion of the brand's 100-year anniversary, the Mitsubishi car company presented its iconic models Pajero and L200 in a special Expedition modification. According to the very words of the Czech representatives of Mitsubishi, these cars are intended to present the car company's relationship to the production of reliable, robust and durable cars that are at home not only on the road, but also in the field.

We chose the Pajero model for the editorial test, because the 200 in the classic "civilian" version passed our editorial test quite recently. Another reason is a certain dignified farewell to this model, Mitsubishi has unfortunately decided to stop producing the Pajero model. A quite incomprehensible step for us, but the market situation is simply developing in a different direction. Cars with a decent engine volume and a classic ladder frame are apparently no longer "in" (in addition, we must not neglect the issue of emission standards). So we have no choice but to hope for the return of this legend.

Modifications of both expedition vehicles are carried out in the spirit of simplicity and accessibility in an effort to reach as many potential customers as possible. The Expedition version therefore has technical modifications and retrofitting, such as Nokian Rockproof off-road tires, an inter-axle and rear differential lock, or a chassis completely covered with five-millimeter-thick sheet metal. The Pajero Expedition is also equipped with a winch that is stored in the luggage compartment and can be used both in the front and back of the car.

To satisfy the requirements of any traveler who is not afraid to venture beyond the fields behind the house, the tested Pajero was equipped with independent heating, a compressor refrigerator, folding chairs and a table. You can lay out all these properties easily and clearly under the two-meter Rhino-Rack Sunseeker awning.

The most interesting part of all the Pajera backpacking gear is what you carry on the roof all the time. Here is the Miggiolina Airlander roof tent in the form of a retractable roof box. After a moment of effort and a few turns of the relevant handle, you have a pleasant triple bed available, including a mattress, lighting, or an insect net. An aluminum ladder is also available to you, which makes this roof bedroom with a view of "whatever you currently want" accessible.

The tested Pajero Expedition is simply a companion for those who desire freedom and a certain unrestrainedness. The Pajero will take you to all possible and impossible places, and to top it all off, it will offer you a spacious interior, pleasant facilities and a bedroom with a view.

The drive of this expedition parade is handled by a turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine with a decent volume of 3.2 liters, which was connected to a five-speed automatic transmission. The expression of this diesel engine is simply great, already at the first start it is immediately clear to you that the "Aluminum" is present and everything is therefore in perfect order. Its power of 140 kW and maximum torque of 441 Nm are just proof of that. The Expedition modification also brought a certain increase in weight, but this power unit does not have the slightest problem with that. Faster movements on the highway are no problem, the speed limit is determined only by the off-road tires, which understandably make a lot of noise at higher speeds. The combination of a powerful engine with an automatic transmission is ideal and very comfortable in the off-road. The speech of the automatic transmission is so calm and deliberate : – ). But it somehow suits me for a car of this category and engine and I enjoy it. During the editorial test, the consumption of the Expedition Pajer was around 14 liters of diesel per 100 km. The presence of an 88 liter tank is then a certain necessity and comfort.

The interior of the car already has a slightly aged impression, but still quite luxurious and rich. The wealth is mainly due to the fact that the base for the expedition conversion was a car that had the highest Instyle equipment. The interior also offers a really large spaciousness, which you will also feel on the generously dimensioned leather seats. The massive instrument panel has a very clear impression and its operation is quite intuitive. The multifunctional steering wheel has a pleasant circumference of its crown and gives you a great feeling of confidence that you are fully in control of this ship. The voluminous central tunnel has a classic handbrake, an automatic transmission selector and a powertrain selector. A certain obsolescence of the interior is due to its long-term presence on the market, and here the rule that what works, does not need to be changed is certainly confirmed here.

The basis of the tested expedition vehicle is the previously mentioned diesel Pajero with automatic transmission and the highest Instyle equipment, which the seller is currently offering you at a promotional price of CZK 1,134,650. The expedition modification brings about 16 items, where the highest portion, as far as the price is concerned, is the aforementioned bedroom on the roof of the car, which will cost about 80,000 CZK. The total price of the modification will then come to CZK 342,000.

The tested Mitsubishi Pajero Expedition showed a certain simplicity and availability of modifying a classic off-road into an expedition special. This modification offers you a certain freedom and liberty, because you simply will not meet a "Dutchman with a caravan" in the places you can explore with it.
