Mitsubishi Lancer EVO – The successor will be a hybrid with a new name!

After a troubled period , the Japanese car manufacturer Mitsubishi is returning to profitability, which leads to the revival of previously postponed projects . The most interesting is the successor of the iconic Lancer Evolution model (photo of the current generation in the gallery). We have up-to-date information for you.

In recent times, Mitsubishi has been struggling with problems, but it was partially solved by a slight restructuring and the start of cooperation with the car manufacturer Renault . The French brand will supply the Japanese with the platform of the Mégane model , on which the new generation of the Mitsubishi Lancer will be built. However, the successor to the Lancer Evolution derivative will have nothing to do with Renault .

While the classic Lancer gets by with Mégane components, the EVO will get such performance and driving capabilities that the platform from Renault simply could not handle . Not to mention that the Evolution will become a completely different model in terms of design. Therefore, a completely new chassis will be developed for it, which will allow the installation of a hybrid powertrain and the S-AWC system. A turbocharged three-cylinder with a volume of 1.1 liters will probably appear under the front hood, which will be connected to electric motors . These will be installed on the front and rear axles, and Mitsubishi will mount the battery with the possibility of recharging from the socket under the rear seats. The result should be a car with all-wheel drive and a perfect 50:50 weight distribution .

We could already see a similar powertrain in the Tokyo XR-PHEV concept , from which the successor of the EVO model is to adopt design elements. You can find a computer graphic representation of the final form in the gallery below the article. Given that the new executive sedan will be completely different from the current Evolution , as well as the future Lancer , it is expected to receive a new name . So that really ends the Lancer EVO as we know it so far. The novel does not yet know the date of its performance, but it could take place by 2016.
