The war for laser headlights does not end, but even today, more conventional, yet revolutionary solutions can be found. At least that's how Mercedes solved it with the Multibeam LED main headlights , which will be the first to get the modernized Mercedes-Benz CLS .
However, it will not be in the standard equipment, where "only" all-diode lights in a new design continue to feature, but only for an additional fee. Multibeam LED technology consists of four modules in one light, with each module consisting of 24 individual LEDs (each adjustable in 255 directions), while being used for both dipped and high beams . For the best possible light cone, which is calculated up to 100 times per second, the headlights use four control units as well as a camera located in the windshield. It will no longer happen that you dazzle oncoming drivers with your headlights or see one of the turns late. In addition, the technology works with navigation, which detects roundabouts and adjusts the intensity of the light beam accordingly.
Other design changes include a new diamond-pattern grille , not dissimilar to that found on the smaller CLA model, a revised front bumper with larger air intakes and a darker background for the taillights. In the interior, it is mainly about a pair of buttons, simplified control of the on-board menu, a new three-spoke steering wheel and an eight-inch display , which is equipped as standard with the Audio 20 CD system, but on request it cooperates with the Comand Online multimedia system . In cooperation with the Comand system, it is possible to use a variety of applications built directly into the car, or via USB, CD/DVD, memory card, Bluetooth, for classic smartphones, or Media Interface , for iPhone and iPod, to use applications and music from portable devices. For an additional fee, the Comand Online system comes with voice control and digital TV and radio reception . Even in the basic configuration, there is Garmin Map Pilot navigation, which uses maps stored on a memory card, but if you have a car equipped with the Comand Online system, you can use 3D maps, enjoy NASA satellite images or monitor the current traffic situation on a predetermined route via Live Traffic Information . The condition, however, is the ability to connect to the Internet.
Under the hood we find a new 2.1-liter diesel four-cylinder in the CLS 220 BlueTEC version with a power of 170 hp and a torque of 400 Nm. The same engine can also be found under the hood of the CLS 250 BlueTEC version, but here it has 204 hp and 500 Nm. The latest diesel version is the CLS 350 BlueTEC with a three-liter six-cylinder engine with an output of 258 hp and a torque of 620 Nm. Among the gasoline engines, a new feature is the twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter six-cylinder engine with an output of 333 hp and a torque of 480 Nm in the CLS 400 version. It is complemented by the CLS 500 version with a power of 408 hp and a torque of 600 Nm. The CLS 63 AMG and CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake versions continue to be powered by a 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged eight-cylinder with an output of 557 hp and 720 Nm, respectively 585 hp and 800 Nm in the AMG S version.
All diesel models, as well as the CLS 500 version, are newly available with the nine-speed 9G-Tronic automatic , which is the world's first nine-speed automatic with hydrodynamic torque converter. Compared to the 7G-Tronic Plus version, on whose success the new transmission builds, the 9G-Tronic is again slightly more economical and brings completely new comfort and shifting agility .
The list of additional equipment does not lack several novelties. These are primarily the AMG Line Plus and Night Package packages , as well as the new Exclusive Passion leather upholstery. The family of assistance systems has grown to include a standard collision warning in the rear of the car , the list of extras has been expanded by an army of elements from the larger S class . This means, for example, a parking assistant with a 360-degree camera, Pre-Safe brakes with pedestrian detection, the BAS Plus system, active blind spot monitoring or reading road signs.
