Audi is preparing a hybrid supercar

Audi currently has only one really sporty model in its offer – the coupe and convertible of the R8 series . But that should change in the future! A rival for the new Enzo or McLaren P1 is on the way.

"There is undoubtedly a place for a super sports car positioned above the R8," says Audi's new head of technical development, Wolfgang Durheimer . "If we make a diesel-hybrid, it will be a bestseller. What always sells is performance – if it's fast with low consumption and looks good, it's a success,” he added.

Yes, you read that right! The new supersport that wants to compete with McLaren or Ferrari will be a diesel-hybrid ! Audi wants to use the winning technology from Le Mans , where it dominated the entire race with the R18 e-tron model: "This year, I watched Audi win Le Mans for the eleventh time and I asked myself how we could transfer diesel-hybrid technology to regular road," Durheimer says about this issue.

In reality, it could look like the following – the power of the unit should be around 700 horsepower and the maximum torque should climb up to 1000 Nm . 100 km/h should be a novelty in about 3 seconds .

The MSB platform could serve as the basis of the new model, on which the new cars of the VW concern with the engine in the middle will be built. Specifically, this applies to the new generation Audi R8, Porsche 911 or Lamborghini Gallardo.

Even if the ideas about a new model sound quite realistic, we won't see a diesel-hybrid model until 2017 . And that could be technology somewhere else entirely…
