Audi presented the first production car with laser headlights

Back in February, BMW announced that it would become the first car company to offer lasers in the main headlights of a mass-produced car from the fall. However, he will no longer win this championship thanks to his great rival from Ingolstadt .

The Audi R8 LMX will go on sale already in the summer and will be ahead of BMW by at least a few weeks. The aging supersport has laser beams that work with the new Matrix LED lights , which the new A8 uses, for example.

Both front lights received one laser module each , with one module consisting of four laser diodes for long-distance lighting. The diameter of this technology is only 300 micrometers and it generates blue laser light with a wavelength of 450 nanometers. This is then converted into technically acceptable white light with a thermal chromaticity of 5500 kelvin using phosphors. According to Audi, these are ideal values for the human eye , which help the driver to better distinguish color contrast and supposedly also prevent fatigue.

The laser beam is activated at 60 km/h and complements the LED headlights. Working with an intelligent camera system , the sensor further helps reduce the risk of dazzling nearby drivers by detecting them and adjusting the light intensity.

However, in addition to the new headlights, the R8 LMX also has other modifications. We can start with the blue Ara Blue bodywork with carbon accessories and above all the firmly attached rear wing. Exclusively for this model, the design of nineteen-inch wheels was designed, behind which the carbon brake discs are hidden. The interior received seats in Nappa leather with blue diamond stitching in the body color. Blue stitching, only in Sepang Blue shade, can also be found on the dashboard, steering wheel or door panels. Other changes include carbon decor on the center panel or new carpets.

Under the hood we find a slightly strengthened 5.2-liter ten-cylinder with a power of 570 hp and a torque of 540 Nm. Compared to the V10 Plus model, this means an increase of 20 horsepower and even 45 horsepower compared to the classic V10 model. Together with the seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission and Quattro all-wheel drive, the R8 LMX accelerates to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds, reaches a top speed of 320 km/h and consumes 12.9 l/100 km.
