The new hybrid sports car from Porsche

The hybrid supersport is nothing new after this year's Geneva Motor Show. After all, the McLaren P1 and LaFerrari have a classic gasoline engine and an electric motor under the hood. But this pair will soon have a new competitor – the Porsche 918 Spyder .

Update 9/9/2013 – added official photos of the production car, adjusted some serial data

And the German automaker certainly does not skimp and will give the 918 only the best . The basis of the two-seater spyder is a monocoque made of polymers reinforced with carbon fibers . In the development of the 918 , a large amount of knowledge gained from working on Porsche racing cars for the Le Mans endurance race in 2014 was used. even without external parts.

The chassis of the new Porsche is equipped with adaptive PASM shock absorbers and rear axle steering. This contributes to excellent driving characteristics. The front axle is composed of double wishbones, at the rear look for a multi-link axle. In addition to adaptive shock absorbers, active PAA aerodynamics , which work in three modes – Race, Sport and E, also contribute to great driving performance.

However, the biggest gem is hidden under the hood. The basis is an eight-cylinder with an output of 608 hp at 8700 rpm with a torque of 530 Nm, which is complemented by two electric motors – one on the front axle with an output of 95 kW and the other on the rear axle with an output of 115 kW. The combined power of the hybrid system is 887 hp, the maximum torque peaks at 917 Nm and 1280 Nm, depending on the gear. Power transmission is handled by a seven-speed dual-clutch PDK transmission (connected to the electric motor at the rear and the V8), which drives the rear axle. Weight distribution is 57% to 43% in favor of the rear axle. Porsche has already tried a similar solution in the racing 911 GT3 R Hybrid .

Top model speed is 345 km/h , 918 to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds, 200 km/h in 7.7 seconds and 300 km/h in 22 seconds. All this with a consumption of 3.0 – 3.3 l/100 km and emissions of 70 – 79 g CO2/km… Decent values, what do you say? Like the McLaren P1, the 918 can run purely on electricity for a while . That moment will be 16 – 32 km long, but the maximum speed is limited to 150 km/h during this time and acceleration to 100 km/h will take place in about 7 seconds. Power for the electric motors is stored in lithium-ion batteries with a capacity of 6.8 kWh.

In order to maximize the efficiency of the engines in various operating situations, the developers from Porsche have prepared five driving modes that can be activated using the steering wheel controller. These are E-Power modes (purely electric driving), Hybrid (the electric motor and the V8 work alternately for the lowest possible consumption), Sport Hybrid (the internal combustion engine is constantly running, as the driving force of the car, and the electric motors add the necessary power), Race Hybrid (mode for maximum performance and a particularly sporty driving style) and Hot Lap (only works in Race Hybrid mode, with the battery giving its absolute maximum for several fast laps).

In addition to the standard 918, the owner can pay extra for the Weissach package (numbered 3 in the pictures), which gives the car both the war livery of the legendary Porsche cars and, on the other hand, a lower weight thanks to parts (roof, rear wing, rear-view mirrors and windshield frame) made of bare carbon and magnesium wheels. Parts of the interior are covered with alcantara instead of leather, and visible carbon replaces most of the aluminum. Part of the sound insulation has also decreased. Result? About 35 kg less weight compared to the starting model.

If anyone is wondering, the 918 Spyder is 4,643 mm long, 1,940 mm wide and 1,167 mm tall. The wheelbase has a value of 2730 mm, 110 liters of luggage can fit into the trunk. The weight of the model is 1634 kg, with a simple calculation you will find that with the Weissach package the 918 will weigh around 1600 kg.
