Mercedes presented the S class with a consumption of 3 l/100 km

Mercedes decided to deal a hard blow to all potential competitors in the luxury car segment. At the Frankfurt Motor Show, the S-class will be shown with a paper consumption of 3 l/100 km .

Mercedes will achieve this value thanks to the launch of the first ever plug-in hybrid in the luxury car segment . The heart of the S 500 Plug-in Hybrid version is a three-liter six-cylinder engine with an output of 333 hp and a torque of 480 Nm. This is helped by an electric motor with a capacity of 109 hp and a torque of 340 Nm. The system output of the limousine is 442 horsepower.

Energy for the electric motor is provided by a lithium-ion battery , which is located in the luggage compartment. Its capacity is not yet known. But it is sufficient enough that the S 500 Plug-in Hybrid can travel up to 30 km purely on electricity with it. In combined drive mode, the maximum speed is limited to 250 km/h, acceleration to 100 km/h takes 5.5 seconds and, according to the official press release, the large sedan consumes only 3 l/100 km and emits 69 g of CO 2 /km.

In addition to the installation of the electric motor, these fabulous values were also achieved with the help of the Intelligent Hybrid system. Its operation is simple – thanks to the connection with the Comand Online system, which cooperates with navigation, "Esko" will get information about the next eight kilometers of the road. Thanks to this, the system can evaluate how best to work with the remaining energy in the accumulators or recuperation of braking energy.

From the interior, the driver can switch between four driving modes – Hybrid, E-Mode (driving purely on electricity), E-Save (fully charged batteries store their energy for later use) and Charge (batteries are charged while driving.

The S 500 Plug-in Hybrid will be complemented by two more hybrid versions of the S class – the S 400 Hybrid and the S 300 BlueTEC Hybrid . The first version can already be obtained in the Czech Republic for a basic price of CZK 2,232,450. Compared to both "conventional" hybrids, the Plug-in Hybrid has one indisputable advantage – its batteries can also be charged from a standard socket. However, how much more expensive this advantage will be than a regular hybrid, where the electric motor only helps the internal combustion engine, we will hopefully find out at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
