2017 Nissan GT-R – Is the Hybrid Godzilla Coming?

Recently, the Japanese Nissan introduced another modernization , this time for 2013, of its super sports car called the GT-R . This is the fifth facelift in a row, and according to a secret source, two more are being developed, which therefore explains the future of the Japanese sports car. All indications are that the Nissan GT-R will live until at least 2015, but someone is talking about 2017.

Such a long time interval is not intentional, as the CEO of Nissan , Carlos Ghosn , only recently gave the "green light" to the development of the new generation GT-R R36 . After this event, the first speculations (perhaps information) began to spread, which I will try to summarize in the following sentences.

The biggest change for the next generation Nissan GT-R will be the design and the engine. In the attached illustration from motortrend.com in the gallery below the article, we can notice that the basic shapes have remained intact, but thanks to the new headlights and aerodynamic elements, the GT-R R36 will have maximum downforce and stability at high speeds. Even Nissan has to take into account the American market and stricter European regulations, and therefore it will be forced to reduce fuel consumption and, above all, CO 2 emissions. And here comes the turning point – according to a secret source, an electric motor may be placed in the new generation GT-R

The Japanese automaker has two options to choose from. The first is the use of the VR38DETT hybrid drive unit with a volume of 3.7 liters and a combined power of 600 horsepower, which was placed in the Infiniti Essence concept (2009 Geneva Motor Show). However, even here the source emphasizes that the Essence is not a GT-R . The engineers are also considering the unit from the Infiniti M35h , we will find out in time what won. But now we know that the new Godzilla would be too heavy if batteries were installed, which could be problematic. The other option is turbocharging and an electric motor generator , which would assist the existing engine, and the whole assembly would be located in front of the rear axle. Unfortunately, this variant would also come with new technologies to reduce CO 2 emissions – for example, a Start/Stop system or a cylinder deactivation system as needed.

Chief engineer Kazutoshi Mizuno revealed at this year's 24h Nürburgring that the premiere of the next generation will take place after the sports model has performance, reliability and a certain endurance capacity, and all this should be done by 2017 . There was also an assistant at that place who then quietly revealed to the secret source that the new generation will be a hybrid and that the weight issue has been resolved. I'll leave it up to each of you to believe it or not.
