Toyota returns to the WRC

Toyota Motorsport focused on Formula One after leaving the World Rally Championship. Recently, however, it has also returned to the development of competition cars. The Yaris R1 was built for the lowest category, the Toyota GT86 should be introduced in the popular R3 category, after a long time a rear-wheel drive competition car. A top-spec WRC car based on the Yaris small hatchback is now being tested. However, a decision has yet to be made about the deployment of the factory team to the World Championship.

This week the team is carrying out the first gravel tests in Tuscany. The test drivers are Stéphane Sarrazin and Sebastian Lindholm . The service background is provided by Motorsport Italia , but according to its owner Bruno De Piant , it is not involved in the development of the car. The deployment of the car in the next season is excluded, rather it should be 2016 , when the new technical regulations will come into force.

Fans are hoping for an increase in the number of manufacturers in the championship. At the turn of the millennium, 7 manufacturers competed in the championship, now only 4 (Volkswagen, Citroën, Ford and Hyundai). In addition, Toyota has a rich history in rallying. In total, four-wheel-drive Celica drivers won the title among drivers ( Carlos Sainz 2x, Didier Auriol and Juha Kankkunen ), and the team also won the Constructors' Cup three times (in 1993-94 with the Celica type and in 1999 with the Corolla WRC type) . He then moved from WRC to Formula 1.
