The eighth generation of Toyota Hilux premiered in May of this year. The European specification was then expected by many in Frankfurt, where, however, it is replaced by a well-honed predecessor. The best-selling pickup of the Japanese manufacturer is thus only now appearing in its form for the old continent.
And compared to the version for Asia, Africa and Australia, it has practically not changed at all visually. The Keen Look design language is simply global in all respects and suits the Hilux very well, especially if it is finished in Volcano red paint (other newcomers are Spice orange and Hydro blue). The only significant difference remains the chrome strip in the lower part of the side windows. Although they will get the basic specifications of classic halogen lamps, the most luxurious version of Invincible will come with LED diodes in dipped beam and daytime running lights. The load area with the Double Cab body is 1645 mm long, while the entire car is 90 mm longer, 20 mm wider and 5 mm lower than its predecessor. If we go back to the cargo space, it can be equipped with an aluminum frame or a lockable hard roof. Practicality further increases the ability to hitch a trailer weighing up to 3.2 tonnes.
The interior, with up to a seven-inch touch screen of the multimedia system, a new steering wheel and metallic decorations, was the main intergenerational step forward. There are also USB and Aux connections, a 220V socket or a rear armrest with cup holders. Upholstery will most often be made of fabric, but for customers who are willing to pay extra, Toyota can also offer leather .
Under the hood, three D-4D diesels and one gasoline four-cylinder will appear. Diesel engines have 2.4, 2.5 and 2.8 liters, while the weakest of them with 103 horses and 260 Nm is the middle one. The 2.4 has 150 hp and 400 Nm, and the 2.8 has 177 hp and 450 Nm. The Dual VVT-i petrol unit has 166 horses and 245 Nm. The 2.4 and 2.5 D-4D are paired with a six-speed manual transmission in the rear-wheel drive version, the more powerful diesel also gets an assignable four-wheel drive with a six-speed automatic. The 2.8 D-4D always comes with two-axle drive and a six-speed automatic, the petrol unit has a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic and the option of all-wheel drive. In addition to the space under the hood, the frame, axles and suspension were also redesigned .
Safety is ensured by seven airbags, active traction control, hill descent assistant, hill start assistant or driving control with a trailer.
