Our colleague Martin was the first to test the Mazda 6 of the current generation, model year 2018. It was a sedan body design with the most powerful "two and a half liter" gasoline engine and automatic transmission. In the test, Martin praised the exterior appearance of the car, mainly the spaciousness of its interior.
I was currently able to test the "six" in Wagon design, with diesel engine, six-speed manual and basic Challenge equipment. And what is this much more popular version?
She still likes it
The current generation has undergone minor retouches, mainly in the front part. It received differently shaped lights, mask, mask edging and the shape of the bumper itself. The edging of the mask is now optically richer, thanks to the greater use of chrome. These positive retouches significantly supported the dynamics of the entire front part. The side profile is quite classic, with a low and elongated silhouette. The rear is still dominated by horizontally oriented lamps and a pair of chrome exhaust tips.
It simply suits Mazdas of the last generation in an extraordinary and unflattering way.
Interior
You already experience the traditional, dynamic feeling of driving in this family station wagon. Mazda simply does it with its users. One of the important ingredients of this cocktail is the interior itself. The Mazda 6 of the current generation will offer a very clear and simple dashboard. Its horizontal proportions and arrangement are clearly visible. Add to that a multifunction steering wheel that fits well in your hand, spacious seats, a low gear lever with short shifting gears, and success is simply set up.
The luggage compartment of the wagon body design then offers a respectable 522 liters of volume.
Motorization
Mazda offers a trio of gasoline (Skyactiv-G) engines and a pair of diesel (Skyactiv-D) engines in the 6 model. Gasoline two-liters have outputs of 107 and 121 kW, "two-and-a-half" then 143 kW, diesel "two-liters" have outputs of 110 and 135 kW. A choice of manual or automatic transmission is available for both engine versions. The diesel "dvadvojka" is also available in the wagon version with a power of 110 or 135 kW and with all-wheel drive.
The version subjected to the editorial test was equipped with a weaker diesel engine with a power of 110 kW and a six-speed manual.
The tested motorization definitely does not lack much, perhaps only a little power during the actual starts, but otherwise it is very quiet and refined. At higher speeds, it is also sufficiently powerful.
In terms of chassis, the car is very balanced, it can be comfortable and at the same time, in the style of Mazda cars, also sufficiently sporty. You also get a good feeling from driving the car, which is quite steep and with good feedback from the wheels.
Conclusion
The unit tested had the basic Challenge equipment, which, however, is relatively rich and offers, for example, a dashboard equipped with a head-up display or adaptive cruise control. Sedan or Wagon? It's just a matter of priorities. Mazda sells both of these body variants for the same price. The basic Challenge equipment with the weakest two-liter petrol starts at a price of CZK 731,900 including VAT, with the weakest diesel at CZK 781,900 including VAT.
The Mazda 6 Wagon is a car that really offers a lot, from the classic advantages of a station wagon body, through a very decent external appearance, a well-crafted interior to balanced driving characteristics.
