Mazda 6 SkyActiv-D – racing diesel special presented in Detroit

Japanese brand Mazda wants to participate in the Rolex Daytona 24 endurance race , which takes place on January 26-27, 2013. For this reason, earlier this week in Detroit, it revealed a special Mazda 6 race car , which has an unusual diesel unit under the hood.

Mazda will enter the Grand-Am GX class specifically with three "sixes" and each team will have five members. Jonathan Bomarito, Marino Franchitti, James Hinchliffe, Tom Long and Sylvain Tremblay will be in the cockpit. The carmaker announced that for the first time ever, a diesel-powered special will take part in these races. Under the hood of the compact four-door sedan, we find a 2.2-liter SkyActive-D engine with an output of around 400 horsepower.

At the Detroit show, the Mazda6 diesel special stood out with the number 70 on its sides, and it's no secret that Mazda will be sponsored by SpeedSource , the brand's long-time motoring partner. We do not have more information for now, there is nothing left but to see how the Mazda 6 will fare in the races.
