Formula 1.0 EcoBoost engine is faster than Zonda!

You know it, you're sitting at your computer and suddenly you're struck by a headline in such a style that you have to rub your eyes and look again. A similar incident happened to me immediately before starting work on this article. How can a small formula with a liter engine be faster than the iconic Zonda ?!

I get it, the headline might be a little misleading, but it's true. The Ford car company went to the North Loop of the Nürburgring with its formula, which, among other things, is homologated for normal operation. Professional Nick Tandy took the wheel and, believe it or not, he circled the circuit in 7 minutes and 22 seconds at an average speed of 169 km/h. But the biggest bombshell is that the formula is powered by a new 1-liter EcoBoost three-cylinder engine! Even so, the car was able to rank among the 11 fastest cars on the circuit (actually even on the planet) and put both the Lamborghini Aventador and the Ferrari Enzo or even the previously mentioned Zonda to shame .

However, it must be put into perspective that the used EcoBoost 1.0 was not quite the standard version that we will find in the Ford B-MAX or Fiesta . The power of the three-cylinder engine here is 151 kW, which is comfortably enough to accelerate to 100 km/h in under 4 seconds or a maximum speed of 255 km/h. It is also excellent that the formula was able to drive a sharp lap with all the accessories that are needed for normal operation.

Representatives of the brand commented on the result in the sense that there is no need for a big and powerful engine to capture one of the best times in the history of the Nürburgring . Even the small EcoBoost engine can confidently rank among the elite with a fraction of the fuel consumed.

A short video with a demonstration of preparations and an interview is also available for this article. You can find it as always in the VIDEOS section.
