Alfa Romeo Spider – A family gem

Melbourne -based Pete Hughes' father was a rally driver who often raced Hillman Imp cars and other cars from the BMC concern. But he had an Alfa Romeo GTV for regular driving, thanks to which Pete became interested in cars. Interest soon turned to obsession when his father brought home a wrecked 1971 Alfa Romeo Spider . Such a red bullet with a retractable roof just blew his mind. And although Pete was only 11 years old, he dreamed of owning his own Spider. He thus spent two decades with the Alfasud and Alfetta types, while his father restored the Spider to its former luster during that time. In 1997, the car was again drivable, two years later the car had new shock absorbers, carburetors and paint. But then little Alfa has to give way to Pete's interests for a while when he falls in love with fast Japanese motorcycles.

In 2013, however, the Spider saw the completion of a long-running renovation. The result finally gave Pete that lovely feeling of satisfaction. And Pete prefers to get up in the morning on the weekend and go to the nearby mountains. Only there can he enjoy precise steering and delicate shifting. And surprisingly, his ten-year-old daughter, who loves long trips with the roof down, is also crazy about Alfa. Pete's father also tried driving this gem, but only last year and for the first time after thirty years of purchase. And he always smiled a lot.
