Will Seat take Renault's newly acquired record?

As soon as Renault posted a time of 7:54.36 seconds , with which the Mégane RS 275 Trophy-R became the fastest front wheel on the Nordschleife, Seat, who previously held the record, plans to return to the legendary Green Hell .

"If we get rid of some parts of the car, I am confident that we will beat Renault. It's only 4 seconds," said Sven Schawe , head of chassis development for the Seat Leon Cupra , which until yesterday morning held the front-wheel drive record with a time of 7:58.44 seconds.

However, Schawe also pointed out the differences between the Leon Cupra and the Mégane 275 Trophy-R : "Yes, Renault has the record, but compared to our car, it's completely different," pointing out that, unlike the Cupra, the record-breaking Mégane does not have rear seats and at the same time has significantly modified chassis.

"We have to find out if it makes sense to offer such a car to our customers. We want to offer a car that is for everyone, not just for a limited number of interested parties. So now we have to decide whether to compete with Renault or not. In any case, we have the car for that," says Sven Schawe about the possible introduction of a sharper Cupra into production .

Some indication that there would be room for an even more extreme Cupra will be the introduction of the Performance package , which includes larger Brembo brakes, lighter 19-inch wheels, side skirts and Michelin Pilot Sport 2 semi-slicks , the elements used in the Leon Cupra's record-breaking drive. The price in Britain was set at 2,500 pounds (approx. 86,000 CZK).

If the cars modified in this way are successful, we can look forward to a Cupra with a sporty tuning of the chassis and 100 kg less weight, doping the engine to 300 hp is also not ruled out. In any case, Seat will not go the all-wheel drive route: "We thought about all-wheel drive, but even if the car will have more power, front-wheel drive is lighter, faster and cheaper. If you have extra money, you can buy a Golf R," concluded Schawe.
