Introducing the new Supra seems like an endless series. In today's episode, for example, we will look at the technology of the upcoming Japanese sports car , which will also become the basis for the new generation BMW Z4 .
BMW will become the leader in the technologies used in both cars. Its gasoline two- liter four-cylinder with a turbocharger will become the basis for driving the new Supra. Toyota pairs it with a total of three electric motors – two on the front axle and one on the rear axle. There should also be a supercapacitor for energy storage , which provides extra power for a certain period of time. Toyota already tried something similar last year, for example, on the Yaris Hybrid-R concept .
There will also be a port for connecting to the electrical network, which means that the new Supra will be a plug-in hybrid . It will also be the first ever Toyota to use a dual-clutch robotic manual transmission , which will ultimately spin all four wheels. The performance of such a motorized coupe will lie somewhere on the border of 354 hp , which is quite a solid figure for a weight of less than 1400 kg.
Although BMW will also make this technology available in the successor to the Z4 roadster , with the possible designation Z5, it will not use it. The range of engines will remain with four-cylinders with a turbocharger, possibly also with in-line six-cylinders . The weight, like the Supra , should not exceed 1400 kg , but unlike it, the new Z4 will still be a rear wheel.
In addition to the engine, however, BMW will also be a donor of other parts for the creation of the body . It is expected to use a steel and aluminum platform together with carbon-reinforced plastic panels that minimize weight and, in turn, maximize body stiffness. This technology is used by BMW in the eco-friendly i3 and i8 models . The body design will of course be different depending on the brand, with Toyota most speculating about the curves from the FT-1 concept . We will see if the new Supra will be as radical as early as 2017 , when the new Z4 is also planned to be launched.
