Volvo heads to Geneva with new engines for the V40 range

Volvo's new Drive-E powertrains , which offer first-class driving characteristics along with low CO2 emissions , will also be available for the Volvo V40 and V40 Cross Country .

Initially, it will be possible to equip the V40 with two engines from the Drive-E family of four-cylinder power units: the T5 petrol engine with turbocharging, 245 hp and 350 Nm of torque, or the D4 diesel engine , which is also turbocharged and has 190 hp and torque respectively 400Nm.

To ensure the required sensitivity, smooth running, economy and controllability, the Drive-E engines are combined with either a new eight-speed automatic gearbox from Volvo Cars, or an improved six-speed manual gearbox , which has been tuned for greater economy. Variants with automatic transmission are equipped with gear shift paddles on the steering wheel enabling manual shifting .

Fuel consumption for the Volvo V40 D4 with manual transmission has dropped to 3.3 l/100 km , which corresponds to CO2 emissions of 85 g/km. For the V40 Cross Country model with manual transmission, it is 4.0 l / 100 km (104 g/km). Fuel consumption for the Volvo V40 T5 with eight-speed automatic transmission is estimated at 5.8 l/100 km (136 g/km).

The D4 engine includes a global innovation, i-Art technology , which uses feedback from each of the injection nozzles instead of one traditional pressure sensor of the common-rail system. Each injection nozzle is equipped with an intelligent chip at the top that monitors the injection pressure. Based on this information , the i-Art self-regulating system ensures that the ideal amount of fuel is injected during each combustion cycle. The diesel engine is also equipped with other improvements, such as a modern twin-turbo system , reduced internal friction and an intelligent valve solution of the cooling system, which allows a much faster warm-up phase during cold starts.
