Volvo presented the second generation SUV XC90

12 years and over 630,000 units sold has the first generation Volvo XC90 to its credit. Such numbers and longevity were probably not expected by anyone from the brand's management at the time, and what's more, the design, safety or travel comfort are above average for the class even after such a time. In other areas, however, the first generation started to miss the train and therefore a radical cut had to be made. That cut is the second generation , which will be officially presented at the Paris Motor Show.

Although the silhouette of the body is significantly influenced by the first XC90, from afar or up close you will definitely not confuse the new model with its predecessor. In the front part, the lights with a strip of LED diodes for daytime running, which is referred to as "Thor's hammer" , are certainly responsible for this. The distinctive lights are ably supported by the chrome radiator grille, which is also not the smallest, and the atypically low-positioned fog lights. When viewed from the profile, the huge wheels come to the fore, which are up to 22 inches in the highest specification . The novelty takes its most significant inspiration from its predecessor at the rear, where it further develops its design of vertical headlights, which, of course, have been adapted to the times. There is also a massive roof spoiler or a double exhaust tip. For those who are looking for a more rugged look, Volvo has prepared plastic cladding for the thresholds, bumpers and fenders, which replaces the original chrome ones.

The interior is one of the nicest and best available in the current automotive world. Up to seven passengers can comfortably sit in the luxurious leather seats (in the last row, a person 1.7 meters tall can reportedly sit comfortably), who will be able to enjoy not only wood, aluminum or other premium materials and four-zone air conditioning , but also audio in the top version Bowers & Wilkins with nineteen speakers with a power of 1400 watts. All important functions, including HERE navigation, the already mentioned air conditioning or radio, are controlled via a large multimedia system with a touch screen (for an additional fee it will also be possible to control it by voice), under which we find only a few buttons for volume control, for example. To connect with a smartphone, the XC90 uses additional Apple CarPlay and Android Auto technologies. The display also replaced the classic analog alarm clocks, enthroned in front of the minimalistic but very successful multifunction steering wheel. The selector of the eight-speed automatic is proud of the crystal from the Swedish company Orrefors.

Under the jacket, we find the SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) modular platform , which will become the basis of all models of the Swedish car company in the future. For the first time ever in the history of Volvo, we can find a double trapezoidal suspension at the front, and at the rear there is a multi-element axle with leaf springs, which, however, are made of composite materials. Necessary safety features will not be missing, including the detection of the car's unwanted departure from the road , in which the belts are tightened and the spine is protected by special lifters in the seat frame, automatic braking, barrier detection, a system that prevents deviation from the lane, blind spot monitoring, an assistant when moving in a queue , detection of pedestrians, cars and bicycles during the day and in the dark or checking the driver's vigilance.

Motor-wise, the XC90 is described as the most powerful and at the same time the cleanest SUV on the market, when it will use exclusively four-cylinder engines of the Drive-E series in combination (for now) with only four-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic. The gasoline line consists of a supercharged and turbocharged unit T6 with a power of 325 hp and a torque of 400 Nm and a weaker engine T5 with a power of 257 hp and a torque of 350 Nm, the weaker diesel D4 with a power of 193 hp and a torque of 400 Nm, with consumption is around 5 l/100 km, and the more powerful D5 with two turbochargers with an output of 228 hp with a torque of 470 Nm, whose consumption is around 6 l/100 km. The most interesting, however, is certainly the plug-in hybrid version of the T8 (called twin engine by Volvo) with a supercharged and turbocharged gasoline four-cylinder with a volume of two liters, driving the front wheels, and a 60 kW electric motor, driving the rear wheels. The total power of the system is 405 hp and a torque of 640 Nm, while the XC90 can travel up to 40 km purely on electricity. Next year we will also see a front-wheel drive version that will have a D4 diesel under the hood.

The so-called First Edition will go on sale before the classic XC90, which will only be produced in 1,927 units (a reference to the year the car company was founded) and will be available from September 3 only through online ordering . In the equipment, we find the black Onix body in combination with 21-inch wheels, Nappa leather-upholstered interior, wooden dashboard decors and its leather covering. Only the T6 petrol unit or the D5 diesel unit can be under the hood. The price of such an edition starts at 2,470,000 crowns, the standard version starts at 1,329,000 crowns in the D4 AWD version. Production will start early next year at the Torslanda factory , with first deliveries expected in May 2015.
