Volkswagen Karmann Ghia is celebrating its birthday

Volkswagen is looking back at the Karmann Ghia model – a sporty derivative of the famous Beetle . This historic model is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. It was originally introduced in 1955 as the third type after the Beetle and the original T1 Transporter . It was particularly successful in America and helped the car company to grow, without it Volkswagen would probably not be a global car company competing for the position of world number one today. The design of the sports car was created by coachbuilder Wilhelm Karmann , who hired Luigi Segre of Turin's Ghia coachbuilder to make his car a reality. When the head of the car company, Heinrich Nordhoff , saw the prototype, he decided that the car would be mass-produced. A total of 450,000 cars were produced by 1974, over 80,000 of them with a convertible body.
