The plug-in hybrid Golf GTE has been on sale for more than a year as an alternative to the petrol GTI and diesel GTD. However, this variant is heading to the legendary GTI meeting at Lake Wörthersee for the very first time and in its most potent form.
However, it must be admitted that the GTE Sport does not have much in common with the regular GTE. The body of the concept is made mainly of carbon fiber and has many futuristic elements. The front part is dominated by LED lights , the characteristic blue line above the reflectors and the radiator grille and three intake holes, at the back there is a massive carbon diffuser with two exhaust tips, a carbon roof spoiler and LED group lights. The aura of exceptionality is given to the car by the upward-opening doors , 20-inch wheels in extended fenders and the contrast of the white body with carbon elements.
The dynamically shaped interior is only a two-seater, the intimate moments of the driver and passenger are also disturbed by the massive carbon central tunnel , equipped with several buttons and blue light strips on the driver's side. Both passengers have anatomically shaped seats with five-point belts, in front of the driver there is also a two-spoke steering wheel with paddles for manual shifting. However, the instrument panel , made up of three displays, is much more interesting. These put together a kind of consecutive series according to how often the driver uses them. The smallest screen shows the engaged gear and the state of energy recovery, the middle one shows the currently used power and intensity of the plug-in hybrid system, and the largest one gives information about the current speed, range and, in the case of the GTE driving mode, also shows the ideal driving track , or the number of laps.
However, the GTE mode, where full power is used, is not the only one in which the Golf GTE Sport can work. As befits a proper plug-in hybrid, it can also run purely on electricity or a combination of electricity and petrol. At the same time, under the hood is a TSI sixteen-cylinder petrol engine with an output of 299 hp and a torque of 400 Nm, whose origin is in the Polo WRC race . The internal combustion engine is complemented by an electric motor with a capacity of 115 hp with a torque of 330 Nm built into the six-speed dual-clutch automatic DSG, or an electric motor with a capacity of 115 hp with a torque of 270 Nm in the rear of the car. Overall, the hatchback can generate 400 hp and 670 Nm, which in GTE mode is enough to accelerate from 0 to 50 km/h in 1.8 seconds, to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds and to 200 km/h in 15. 9 seconds. As you have surely understood from the layout of the engines, if all three units are permanently installed, the Golf is a four-wheel drive. At the opposite end of the spectrum, in E-Mode , the hatchback will travel up to 50 emission-free kilometers. However, the battery capacity is not indicated. Finally, we should also mention the Hybrid mode with an average consumption of 2 l/100 km.
