Toyota is returning the LC 70 to production in Japan

In 1984, the Toyota Land Cruiser 70 entered the Japanese market, which is still sold today in some markets in the Middle East, Australia or Africa, in numbers exceeding an average of 6,400 units per month . In Japan, however, the popular model ended ten years ago , and fans there have so far called in vain for its production to resume. However, the word "yet" is important.

This year, the Land Cruiser 70 celebrates its thirtieth birthday , and Toyota has decided to give its fans the best gift – it will resume production and sales of the model on the domestic market for a year, and in addition to the classic version with a closed body and the name Van, it will also add a Pickup with a double cabin – the one in It was never made available to Japan. Compared to the version from ten years ago, the "new" design changed when it received a modified radiator grille, a different hood, new lights with integrated blinkers or a different front and rear bumper. However , the basic shape of the body with the spare wheel on the fifth door has not been affected by the ravages of time. There is a choice of 16-inch steel or alloy wheels, a total of seven body colors combined with 30th Anniversary logos, and off-road ambitions underlined by a front winch that lengthens the car by 40 mm.

Progress can be seen more on the interior than on the bodywork – Toyota has replaced the instrument panel and significantly modernized the center panel, which can even be equipped with navigation for an additional fee! Standard equipment includes front airbags and ABS , i.e. only the most necessary safety equipment. The Land Cruiser 70 Van measures 4810mm in length, 1870mm in width and 1920mm in height, the Pickup is slightly larger at 5270mm in length, 1770mm in width and 1950mm in height. It also rides on a longer wheelbase of 3180mm, while the Van is "only" 2700mm. Both models can accommodate five passengers and cargo , in the case of a Van weighing 500 kg and in the case of a Pickup weighing 600 kg.

You won't find what Toyota has modernized inside and outside under the body of an off-roader. It is still true that the Land Cruiser is equipped with a ladder frame and, thanks to transverse stiffeners, it offers not only exemplary rigidity on unpaved roads, but also comfort on classic ones. At the front we would find coil springs while at the rear are leaf springs. Of course, all-wheel drive is not missing, but it can be assigned. Under normal conditions, for example in the city or when driving on the highway, only the rear wheels are driven, but when entering an unpaved road, the driver mechanically, via a reduction gearbox , also assigns the drive to the front axle. For an additional fee, it is also possible to get an electrically lockable front and rear differential . Specific numbers say the Van has a ground clearance of 200mm, front approach angle of 33 degrees, overhang angle of 26 degrees and rear approach angle of 23 degrees, Pickup has ground clearance of 225mm, front approach angle of 35 degrees, overhang angle of 27 degrees and rear approach angle 25 degrees.

The engine is powered by a four-liter six-cylinder petrol engine with variable valve timing VVT-i and a lightweight aluminum cylinder block, which has an output of 231 hp at 5,200 rpm and a maximum torque of 360 Nm at 3,800 rpm. In addition to the aforementioned reduction gearbox, the Land Cruiser 70 also has a five-speed manual gearbox , with which it consumes (according to the Japanese cycle JC08) 15.2 l/100 km.

The base price was set at 3,600,000 yen (approx. 728,000 crowns) for the Land Cruiser 70 Van and 3,500,000 yen (approx. 708,000 crowns) for the Land Cruiser 70 Pickup . Production will run for one year at the Yoshiwara plant, and Toyota expects about 200 orders per month. The car also comes with a special leather key box and a leather record pad. You can then have your car improved by the company Modellista , which will replace the radiator grille, supply a protective bag for the spare wheel, add an alarm to the interior, new carpets and perhaps even the aforementioned navigation system.
