Seven million cars sold since 1964 and the title of the best-selling mid-size pickup truck in the US can only be tied with the Toyota Tacoma . It is presented in Detroit in a new generation, which is better than its predecessor in every way and also has an interesting gadget in the standard equipment.
But we have to start from the ground up, literally – the frame of the new Tacoma uses a larger percentage of high- strength steel , which makes it stronger and stiffer at the same time. The body is several kilograms lighter than its predecessor thanks to heat-welded high-strength steel. The chassis settings were also revised not only for better driving characteristics on the road, but also in the field. For this purpose, the Tacoma can also be equipped with an automatic limited-slip differential, a lockable rear differential , active traction control or hill start assist.
Basic versions will get a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine , higher equipment levels can look forward to a 3.5-liter six-cylinder engine working in the Atkinson cycle with D-4S technology. The Japanese automaker is keeping the detailed specifications to itself for now, in addition to the two-axle drive, a single-axle drive version will also be available, the six-speed automatic can be alternated with a six-speed manual for the six-cylinder.
The design is rather evolutionary compared to its predecessor, having received new front lights with optional LED daytime running lights , a more prominent radiator grille, redesigned rear lights and 16-, 17- or 18-inch wheels. In addition to the "standard" grades SR, SR5 and Limited, the offer will also include versions from TRD ( Toyota Racing Development ) labeled Sport or Off-road.
As evolutionary as the bodywork may be, the interior has been revolutionized and is now much closer to regular passenger cars. Softened materials , metallic decors and much better processing are new. Equipment may include a multimedia system , leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, blind spot monitoring, wireless phone charger or blind spot monitoring. The icing on the cake is the GoPro camera that comes as standard in all versions, located near the rear-view mirror. Toyota justifies its presence as an opportunity for the owner to share his " adventure " with the new Tacoma with others.
