Toyota is planning new variants of the GT86

In the middle of last year, it seemed that we would probably never see the open and above all supercharged Toyota GT86 . According to the latest news, the Japanese automaker has turned around and is also preparing a sedan in addition to the two variants mentioned above!

We already wrote about the more practical sedan version at the end of December, and the information about this model remains basically the same. The length of the sedan will increase by 510 mm to 4750 mm and the height will increase by 100 mm (1400 mm in total). The width of 1780 mm will remain. Four adult passengers should be comfortably seated in the interior, which is the main goal of the engineers while maintaining an elegant appearance.

Since the sedan will be larger and heavier than the base coupe, the engineers have prepared a pair of completely new power units. The basis will be a supercharged two-liter engine with an output of more than 300 horsepower in combination with an eight-speed automatic. This combination will also reach the coupe in 2016, when a more significant facelift is planned.

The second option will be a hybrid device , which will combine a two-liter boxer engine and an electric motor (however, it will not be a unit from the Subaru XV Crosstrek ). In order for the sedan to have the traction of a four-wheeler, Toyota is developing electric motors built into the wheels . The turbocharged sedan should go on sale next year, the hybrid will arrive in mid-2016.

Much earlier we will see the open version in showrooms, which was foreshadowed by the FT-86 Open concept . The canvas roof remains, which folds down in 20 seconds at the push of a button and adds 30 kg of weight . Nevertheless, the 200-horsepower atmospheric two-liter engine will remain under the hood. Despite the fact that the open variant was planned from the very beginning of the development of the "Toyobar", it is not at all clear whether we will also see it in the coat of the Subaru BRZ.
