The second generation of the four-door Smart does it differently

Only once in history did the Smart have more than two seats . That was when the first generation of the ForFour model came in 2004, which was technically based on the Mitsubishi Colt. We're not going to lie, Smart didn't experience greater commercial success, so the ground collapsed after it for eight long years . However, now the ForFour is back, even with Renault Twingo technology, and it will want to impress with its stylish design .

The second ForFour is slightly smaller than its predecessor (thanks to the Renault Twingo platform), measuring only 3.49 meters in length, 1.66 meters in width, 1.55 meters in height and riding on a 2494 mm wheelbase. Compared to the ForTwo, the ForFour is of course more practical when it offers a basic boot volume of 185 liters (255 liters with the roof) and 730 liters with the rear seats folded down (up to 975 liters with the roof). In addition to the larger volume, you get an area of 1285 x 996 mm when the rear seats are folded down, and you can transport objects up to 2.22 meters long when the passenger seat is folded down. The turning radius is 8.65 meters.

In terms of design, the ForFour is practically just an extended version of the five-door ForTwo. Similar to the Cologne triplets, the Smart can also be equipped with a retractable fabric part of the roof and thereby at least create the impression of a convertible. There is also a Tridion safety frame here, again in a contrasting shade to the bodywork (up to 40 colors in total). The front lights are equipped with LED diodes for daytime running as standard and, like the smaller model, the ForFour also has the new logo of the automaker. The only drawback is the hinged rear side windows , on the other hand, the doors, which open at an angle of almost 90 degrees , are an advantage.

The interior, like the body, has many panels, the color of which can be adapted to the customer's taste and also to the color of the body. The instrument panel is dominant, consisting of a 3.5-inch color display and an analog speedometer . The second display is located on the center panel, but it belongs to the radio or, in higher equipment, navigation . For an extra charge, a multifunctional steering wheel is available, through which the radio or navigation can be controlled, or for the first time also JBL audio with a 320 W amplifier and twelve speakers.

Thanks to the widening of the wheel track by 100 mm not only did the wheels move more into the corners of the car, but also improved agility and driving characteristics. The front axle uses MacPherson suspension, at the back we find the new De-Dion axle , which provides enough comfort for the car's crew. The steering uses the Direct-Steer system with variable transmission and electric power steering for greater driving pleasure. A lower and stiffer sports suspension is available for an extra charge. A greater amount of high- strength steel was used for the production of the body, and the deformation zones were also improved. The basic safety equipment includes ESP and the Crosswind Assist system, which protects against overturning.

Under the hood we find, thanks to the technical relationship with the Renault Twingo, an atmospheric liter three-cylinder with a power of 71 hp and a torque of 91 Nm or a turbo-doped three-cylinder with a volume of 0.9 liter with a power of 90 hp and a torque of 135 Nm. In the future, we will also see a basic gasoline engine with 60 horsepower. Of course, the engine is located at the back and the rear wheels are driven via a five-speed manual or a six-speed dual-clutch automatic.

The equipment will be divided into Passion, Prime and Proxy grades from the start, with a special Edition #1 available for a limited time, which will offer several design elements such as a safety frame in Lava orange shade combined with a gray body. The price should not exceed 11,600 euros (approx. 320,000 CZK).
