The fifth generation of the Opel Corsa is the second, very important model for the European market after the Volkswagen Passat , which was introduced in the last few days. The hatchback marked with the letter E most of all resembles the urban Adam, but you can also find elements of the outgoing generation.
The new Corsa sits on the SCCS platform , which is identical to the outgoing generation and was developed by Opel together with Fiat. You can tell by the dimensions, because the length of the Corsa has grown by only 3 mm to 4002 mm. This is primarily due to the distinctively shaped front bumper with a large radiator grille and rather complicated headlights with LED daytime running lights. The inspiration from the smaller Adam, which actually offers the same thing here, is definitely not purely coincidental. The rear, on the other hand, aims a little higher, looking for inspiration in the Astra or the small MPV Meriva . And where do we find the current generation? Above all, when viewed from the profile, it is clear that Opel has actually only modernized a lot (even though the body should have a minimum of identical elements).
If we talked about the exterior in connection with the strong inspiration from the Adam hatchback , the interior is perhaps completely identical to the Adam. Even with the larger model, the dominant element is the seven-inch touch screen of the IntelliLink multimedia system , which works with both Apple products and smartphones with the Android operating system. Infotainment can also be controlled by voice and thanks to its installation, the buttons have been reduced to a minimum . In addition to the central panel, the steering wheel, instrument panel and seats also underwent a generational change, and a panoramic roof can be purchased for an additional fee. The trunk of the three- and five-door model continues to hold 285 liters.
Although the bodywork may seem similar to that of the previous generation, technically the new Corsa does not have a single part in common with the previous one!. It all starts with the new steering geometry and the specific calibration of the electric power steering software with City mode , thanks to which the force needed to control the steering wheel is reduced when maneuvering at low speeds. Also new are ball joints, front axle geometry, rear axle tuning and a stronger subframe. Thanks to a 5 cm lower center of gravity and the already mentioned modifications to the chassis and steering, it was possible to improve directional stability and overall driving characteristics, the new characteristics of the shock absorbers contribute to a more comfortable ride. Customers will be able to go for two versions of the chassis – Comfort and Sport , with the latter offering stiffer springs and shock absorbers, specific steering geometry and a boost tuned for more immediate responses.
The biggest innovation under the hood is the use of a turbocharged 1.0 Ecotec three-cylinder gasoline engine with direct injection and an output of 90 or 115 hp. Both versions have a torque of 170 Nm, which is available as early as 1800 rpm. Other representatives of the gasoline range are the 12-liter with 70 horsepower and the 14-liter with 90 horsepower (both in the naturally aspirated version), respectively the turbocharged 14-liter with 100 horsepower with a maximum torque of 200 Nm. The 1.3 CDTI four-cylinder diesel engine is available in 75 and 95 hp versions. Transmissions include a five-speed manual at least for the more powerful diesel, a six-speed manual as well as a newly developed six-speed automatic.
For the very first time in the segment of small cars, or at least in the Corsa series, it will get some safety assistants . We can name the bi-xenon headlights, the Side Blind Spot Alert system for safe lane changes, the Opel Eye camera with Road Sign Recognition, the Lane Departure Warning system, the High Beam Assist high beam system, the Following distance monitoring system Distance Indication with Forward Collision Warning (using a red warning symbol that is projected directly onto the windshield) or Tire Pressure Monitoring System tire pressure monitoring. For safer orientation when parking, the Corsa uses the Advanced Park Assist parking assistant , which can park the car completely by itself by reversing, or a reversing camera. On request, you can also purchase a FlexFix bicycle carrier , integrated into the rear bumper.
The premiere will take place at the Paris Motor Show in October , after which the Corsa E will immediately go on sale. As usual, the newcomer will also be available in Britain under the Vauxhall brand .
