The final form of the 208 HYbrid FE

You were able to meet the Peugeot 208 HYbrid FE for the first time on our website at the beginning of this year's holidays . The article at the time ended with a wish that we would learn more about the car before the premiere in Frankfurt .

And the French car manufacturer seems to have heard us, because the definitive form of this very interesting car has been released to the world. It is still true that Peugeot intends to offer the dynamic parameters of the GTi model with a consumption of 2.1 l/100 km. After all, if we unlock the additional name FE, we find that it stands for Fun and Efficient .

The road to such low consumption was certainly very thorny. At the beginning of the whole project, a basic 208 with a 1.0 VTi engine stood in the garage. However, the car company's engineers reduced the weight of the car by 20% by using composite materials and carbon. The standard 208 1.0 VTi weighs 975 kg. For the sake of interest, I will mention that the frame of the model now weighs 227 kg (normally 295 kg).

Aerodynamics also underwent major changes. The track of the rear wheels has been shortened by 20 mm on each side, improving airflow. The rear part and the roof, which has been extended and ends with a rear spoiler, have been completely redesigned . The radiator grille is now smaller, but still lets more air through. A sharp eye will certainly notice the missing mirrors, which have been replaced by cameras, and the special shape and design of the nineteen-inch wheels. It is not surprising that the aerodynamics were improved by 25% compared to the standard 208.

Although the engine is based on the already mentioned liter three-cylinder, thanks to numerous modifications, the volume rose to 1.2 liters . In addition, the unit received many modifications – for example, the addition of direct injection, a modified crankshaft made of nitrided steel, connecting rods made of titanium or pistons made of a copper-steel alloy. The compression ratio was increased from 11:1 to 16:1. The power of 68 hp, despite all the changes, remained the same, but the torque jumped to 120 Nm. The internal combustion engine is assisted by a 41 hp electric motor (136 hp when used as a brake generator), which has its basis in the 908 HYbrid 4 racing model. It weighs just 7 kg, and enough energy is provided by lithium-ion batteries with a capacity of 0.56 kWh, which weigh 25 kg and are placed on the subframe together with the twenty-liter fuel tank.

Thanks to all the modifications mentioned above, the 208 HYbrid FE consumes only 2.1 l/100 km and emits 49 g of CO2/km. Peugeot also states that the acceleration to 100 km/h will take place in exactly 8 seconds. For comparison, the base model consumes 4.3 l/100 km, emits 99 g CO2/km and reaches 100 km/h in 14 seconds.
