The media has been speculating for quite some time about the fully electric competitor of the BMW 3 Series from the American automaker Tesla Motors . Only now, however, thanks to Elon Musk , the head of the car company, we officially know the name and some basic information.
The automaker's original plans indicated that the midsize sedan would be called the Model E: "We have a Model S sedan and a Model X SUV, and when a friend asked me what the third car would be called, I said Model E. We have a Model S, a Model X, and we could also have a Model E,” revealed Musk . "We wanted to name the car Model E, but then Ford came along, which owns the rights to the Model E designation. I thought it was crazy – Ford wants to kill SEX! So we had to come up with a different designation, and the new sedan will be called Model 3, and it will be represented by three dashes – it will be S III X," added Musk .
The Model III will be presented to the world for the first time in 2016 and should ride on a completely new platform with new technology, for which the British engineer Chris Porritt is responsible. After all, Tesla Motors is planning to build a research and development center in Britain, which could participate in development of Model III.
The price could remain at a relatively favorable level of around 35,000 dollars (approx. 710,000 CZK), mainly thanks to the planned Gigafactory for batteries, which is to be located in America. And speaking of batteries – they are supposed to give the Model III a range of up to 322 km .
