Review Peugeot 5008 GT 1.6 PureTech – modernized and petrol

After the official launch on the market and the first short test drives, we come to full-fledged editorial tests of the newly modernized Peugeot cars, i.e. the 3008 and 5008 models.

My colleague David already had the opportunity to test the top version of the modernized Peugeot 5008, i.e. a car with GT PACK equipment and a two-liter diesel engine under the hood.

Then, thanks to a certain weakness for this model, I don't let its modernization slip away and sit in the car, which is equipped with the already well-known PureTech gasoline six-cylinder working with an eight-speed automatic. The currently tested car also has top-of-the-range GT equipment and a very attractive Nacré white color.

Modernized exterior

The current modernization of the sibling pair of the Peugeot 3008 and 5008 affected, within the external appearance of both cars, mainly the front part. It has undergone changes that are quite typical of the current design direction of the Peugeot brand.

The front part is newly decorated with a handsome mask with a spatial effect, which is made up of very fine ribbing that goes all the way to the headlights. These are equipped with Full LED technology in the top-of-the-line GT and GT PACK trims, they also have a cornering light function and can now alternate the missing fog lights to a certain extent.

Of course, the headlights also feature the famous light tusks, which extend deep into the front bumper and thus complete the typical look of current Peugeot cars.

The attractive and robust shapes of the 5008 are not denied even in other parts of the car, in the side part it is supported by distinctive plastic protection of the wheel arches and the lower part of the doors, which are highlighted by chrome lines, all in sharply cut lines.

The rear of the car has prominent vertical proportions, not only following the example of its predecessor, but mainly because of its seven-seat configuration. This part is significantly calmer than the previous part.

The rear lamps are integrated into the black horizontal panel and together with the black lollipop of the rear window form a complete set. As part of the modernization, the rear lights also received Full LED technology and a spatial effect structure with the famous "claws".

The current modernization has significantly rejuvenated both of the announced cars and moved them in terms of expression to its siblings a generation younger.

Interior with only minimal changes

The modernization of the interior has its signature, for example, on new decors, the main and clearly visible element of the announced rejuvenation are the two displays. They saw a significant shift both in their sizes and by modifying the graphic display.

The instrument cluster in front of the driver will offer a diagonal of 12.3″. Its displayed data can be freely changed or personalized. A new feature of this display is the display of images from an infrared camera, which automatically alerts you to pedestrians or cyclists moving on the road.

The on-board infotainment display then offers a decent 10" diagonal from higher equipment. The touch screen, or rather its main menu, is also controlled from the already traditional keyboard, which in the case of the 3008 and 5008 models is integrated into the elegant hockey stick lining the central tunnel.

The interior itself is governed by the i-Cockpit principle, about which we have already written many lines. Some suit it, others on the contrary, personally, as a person of shorter stature, I am one of those who have no problem with this interior layout concept (instrument compartment raised above the small steering wheel).

The interior of the Peugeot 5008 will offer dynamic and original shapes, but its main advantage is its interior spaciousness. The front seats of the tested car offered sufficient comfort, lateral guidance and a massage function with five preset massage programs. There is space for handing out on the rear seats. The bulky doors themselves make it very easy to get into these positions. The rear bench consists of three identical seats that fold into the floor. Folding tables, which are equipped with the backrests of the front seats, are a matter of course.

The Peugeot 5008 has a seven-digit specification, a pair of seats is elegantly hidden in the floor of the luggage compartment. It is very easy to fold them out, unfortunately there is not much space to sit here and these places are more in the emergency category.

The luggage compartment of the 5008 has a pleasantly low loading edge in the context of SUVs. The trunk will offer simple and box-like shapes and a basic volume of 702 liters.

Offered motorizations and driving impressions

The modernized Peugeot 5008 is currently offered with a pair of petrol and a pair of diesel engines. You will not yet find a plug-in hybrid or fully electric powertrain under the hood of this model.

Gasoline engines are represented by the turbocharged three-cylinder 1.2 PureTech (130 horsepower) and the turbocharged four-cylinder 1.6 PureTech (180 horsepower). Diesel is traditionally represented by a turbocharged 1.5 BlueHdi engine with a power of 130 hp and a turbocharged two-liter with a power of 180 hp.

The currently tested 5008 was equipped with the very well-known and proven PureTech turbocharged petrol six-cylinder engine. In the 5008, it is tuned to 180 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque. Acceleration to 100 km/h is managed with the big 5008 in a very respectable 8.3 seconds, and the "maximum" is at the limit of 219 km/h.

Even under the hood of the 5008, this engine works excellently, it is sufficiently soundproofed, and towards the cabin it has a very quiet and tidy impression. Its cooperation with the eight-speed automatic offers a very comfortable driving experience.

As for consumption, in the case of tested gasoline, count on an average value of around 8 liters per 100 km.

In terms of driving performance, the tested unit had the classic choice of NORMAL, SPORT and ECO driving modes, which were supplemented by the additional driving modes MUD, SAND and SNOW as part of the additional Advance Grip Control system.

For the GT and GT PACK equipment, the sports mode is enriched with the DRIVER SPORT PACK, which can spice up the car's sporty character even more. The gearbox does not save the engine in any way and very willingly lets the tachometer needle run up to the red field. And yes, even this seven-seat family SUV can give you a certain "sporty" driving experience.

The chassis of the 5008 is tuned for comfort, yet it feels stiffer and quite sure despite its higher ground clearance.

In conclusion

You can purchase a modernized Peugeot 5008 at a promotional price starting at CZK 614,000 including VAT. This is a car with the basic Active equipment with a three-cylinder 1200 PureTech and a manual six-speed gearbox. The basic diesel 1.5 BlueHdi, again with a six-speed manual, starts at CZK 654,000 including tax.

The specific car tested by us, with almost top-of-the-line GT equipment, a turbocharged petrol engine and an eight-speed automatic, starts at CZK 880,000 as part of the promotional price. For a complete TOP, i.e. a car with GT PACK equipment, a two-liter diesel and an eight-speed automatic, prepare exactly 1,000,000 CZK including VAT.

The current modernization clearly benefited the 3008 and 5008 models. In terms of exterior design, we have not only a nice front mask, but also new rear lamps, all in the spirit of the current design direction of the Peugeot car company. The interior of the car has been improved in terms of both on-board displays, and the presence of the latest generation driving assistants will also please you.

The 5008 model then offers a richly dimensioned interior, within the body, which does not lack enough attractive and dynamic shapes.
