Review Peugeot 3008 GT HYBRID4 – modernized plug-in hybrid thoroughbred

We already told you about the recent rejuvenation of the 3008 and 5008 in our recent Peugeot tests. But now we have the very top of the current 3008 range, which is the plug-in hybrid version called HYBRID4. And as the label itself suggests, this is a car with all-wheel drive.

Sensitively modernized exterior

The latest modernization of the Peugeot 3008 and 5008 affected, within the external appearance of both cars, mainly the front part. It is newly decorated with a handsome mask with a three-dimensional effect, which consists of very fine ribbing that goes all the way to the front headlights. These are equipped with Full LED technology in the top-of-the-range GT and GT PACK trims, they also have a cornering light function and can now alternate the missing fog lights to a certain extent. The front headlights also have the famous light tusks extending deep into the front bumper.

The attractive and robust shapes of the 3008 are not denied in the other parts of the car either, in the side part it is supported by distinctive plastic protection of the wheel arches and the lower part of the doors, which are highlighted by chrome lines, all in sharply cut lines.

The rear lamps are then integrated into the black horizontal panel and, together with the black lollipop of the rear window, form a complete set. As part of the modernization, the rear lights also received Full LED technology and a spatial effect structure with the famous "claws".

The modernization of the advertised models contributed to their positive rejuvenation and brought them significantly closer in appearance to their younger and smaller siblings.

Minimal changes in the interior

Modernization was seen in the interior, for example, in new decors, but the two displays became the most visible element of the rejuvenation. They saw a significant shift both in their sizes and by modifying the graphic display.

The instrument cluster in front of the driver will offer a diagonal of 12.3″. Its displayed data can be freely changed or personalized. A new feature of this display is the display of images from an infrared camera, which automatically alerts you to pedestrians or cyclists moving on the road.

The on-board infotainment display then offers a decent 10" diagonal from higher equipment. The touch screen, or rather its main menu, is also controlled from the already traditional keyboard, which in the case of the 3008 and 5008 models is integrated into the elegant hockey stick lining the central tunnel. As part of the plug-in hybrid version, the announced keyboard is supplemented with one controller activating the electric drive assistant, which informs you about the flow of energy, the consumption of gasoline and electricity, or the charging status.

The interior itself is governed by the i-Cockpit principle, about which we have already written many lines. Some suit it, others on the contrary, personally, as a person of shorter stature, I am one of those who have no problem with this interior layout concept (instrument compartment raised above the small steering wheel).

The interior of the Peugeot 3008 will offer dynamic and original shapes, but its main advantage, like its larger sibling, is its interior spaciousness. The front seats of the tested car offered sufficient comfort, lateral guidance and a massage function with five preset massage programs. There is plenty of space in the rear seats.

The luggage compartment of the HYBRID and HYBRID4 versions is reduced and thus has a basic volume of 395 liters. However, the bottom is double and the charging cables can be hidden in its lower part.

A powerful plug-in hybrid

As I mentioned in the very introduction, the tested plug-in hybrid version is the only one in the offer that gives this car all-wheel drive.

The basis of the HYBRID4 powertrain is the proven PureTech turbocharged 16-cylinder gasoline engine with a power of 147 kW. Here, the motorization cooperates with an eight-speed automatic, into which a front electric motor with an output of 81 kW was additionally integrated. Another electric motor, which has become part of it, takes care of the drive of the second, rear axle. This electric motor then contributes to the system with its 83 kW of power.

Overall, this plug-in hybrid powertrain reaches a very respectable combined output of 300 horsepower (220 kW) and 520 Nm of torque.

The Peugeot 3008 HYBRID4 offers four driving modes: Electric, Hybrid, Sport and 4WD.

After each "activation", the vehicle automatically starts in full electric mode. This is usually taken care of by the rear electric motor, i.e. the rear axle. In this mode, the car behaves like a classic electric car with a range of 59 km indicated by the automaker. The reality is traditionally slightly different, and my fully charged car reported a range of just over 30 km.

The HYBRID4 version is equipped with a battery with a capacity of 13.2 kWh (usable 10.4 kWh), as well as a classic on-board charger of 3.7 kW, or an additional 7.4 kW. In the presence of a stronger on-board charger, you can charge the car from 0-100% using the WallBox in about 2 hours. Then from the home network in approx. 8.1 hours.

In the hybrid mode, the car thinks for you, i.e. it determines when it will drive purely on electric energy and when it will connect the classic "combustion engine". It all depends on the state of charge of the battery, your current driving style, road profile, etc.

In sports mode, the 3008 HYBRID4 "scrapes" all the kilowatts it has available at that moment. Three hundred horses of combined power give the car excellent values not only in terms of acceleration itself.

The 4WD mode offers this SUV permanent all-wheel drive, and thus your field of action tries to expand even less accessible places. All-wheel drive is also available in pure electric mode, so you can quietly creep through, in the case of the 3008, rather lighter terrain.

In terms of driving performance, the HYBRID4 version can offer you several positions, from the quiet and comfortable driving of an electric car, during which you "skip" through the entire city in peace without emissions, to a very fast transfer from one side of the country to another. The mobilized forces of the Sport mode have difficulty keeping to the set highway limit.

However, the higher weight of the car (less than 2 tons) and the more comfortable chassis do not make it a cornering special, but its acceleration in a straight line is very user-friendly and more than addictive.

In the case of regular recharging, you will also reach very friendly values of gasoline consumption of the car, which are always dependent on the current state of charge of the batteries. With the car, I ranged from 2.0 l/100 km to 7.5 l/100 km.

In conclusion

The modernized 3008 can now be purchased as part of the promotional price from 570,000 CZK including VAT. This is a car with the basic Active equipment and a three-cylinder PureTech 1200, which cooperates with a manual six-speed gearbox. The basic diesel 1.5 BlueHdi with a six-speed manual starts at CZK 610,000 including tax.

The tested Hybrid4 occupies the highest position in the price list of the 3008 model. It is available only in the top GT and GT PACK trims, i.e. from 1,200,000 CZK and from 1,270,000 CZK including VAT.

The current modernization of the 3008 and 5008 models has benefited greatly. In terms of exterior design, we have an updated front mask, but also new rear lamps, all in the spirit of the current design direction of the Peugeot car company. The interior of the car has been improved in terms of both on-board displays, and the presence of the latest generation driving assistants will also please you.

The tested Peugeot 3008 in the HYBRID4 version is a powerful plug-in hybrid that offers the advantages of a classic electric car in the form of quiet, comfortable and emission-free driving.

Its "electric horses" are able to save fuel in the case of a classic internal combustion engine, and more than adequately assist it when power is needed. Of course, the announced interplay of both worlds only works if the car is regularly charged.
