Renault unveiled the new Kadjar crossover

When Nissan replaced the popular Almera with the Qashqai crossover in 2006, all competitors were knocking on the forehead. Today, however, they would prefer to imitate his actions, because last year alone, almost every fifth car sold was a crossover . Among the competitors is alliance partner Renault, whose bet on the South Korean Koleos didn't quite work out. That's why the Kadjar comes, built on the foundations of the second generation Qashqai, which wants to build on the success of the smaller Captur.

Updated 03/03/2015 – Added information on engines and gearboxes, respectively two special versions.

It is between Capture and Koleos that the 4.45 meter long , 1.84 meter wide and 1.60 meter high Kadjar has its place. That he wants to build on the 178,000 Capturs sold is already indicated by the external appearance with a distinctive front and rear part. At the front, in addition to the large logo and corporate mask, LED diodes for daytime running lights stand out, supplemented by two Pure Vision diode modules in the main reflectors. The recess in the lower part of the door, as well as the extended rear fenders, are already familiar from the smaller Clio or the Captur mentioned several times, and the new Mégane will definitely get their interpretation. The rear part is again particularly reminiscent of its smaller sibling and impresses with the disparity between the glass and sheet metal surface. The attractiveness of the model in the promotional photos is also enhanced by the 19-inch wheels , red body paint, plastic-lined fenders and visible chassis protection in the front and rear bumpers. Off-road elements will remain for all versions, but the base model will have slightly smaller wheels instead of "19" wheels.

The cabin is composed mainly of softened plastics , the surface treatment and processing of which should be at the top of the segment. In front of the driver is a TFT display of the on-board computer, the center console in higher versions is decorated with the R-Link 2 multimedia system with a seven-inch screen and voice control, through which safety assistants such as emergency braking, lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition or a reversing camera will be available. A glazed panoramic roof with an area of 1.4 m 2 will also be an additional charge. The Kadjar has borrowed some of its variability from the larger Espac – thanks to the Easy Brake system , the 60:40 split seats can be folded down directly from the luggage compartment, and the passenger seat can also be folded down to transport longer items. The trunk can hold 472 liters in the basic layout , another 30 liters are available thanks to the amount of storage space. In addition to the quality of workmanship, the Kadjar should be at the top of the class thanks to the width of 1465 mm between the wheel arches and the height of 910 mm on the rear seats.

Underneath the body is a modular CMF platform with front-only or all-wheel drive. Although the front wheel will certainly not travel as much as a quad bike with 2WD, Auto or Lock modes, it will at least be equipped with the Extended Grip system, i.e. a helper when driving in worse weather conditions. A certain versatility of the Kadjar, which is evident from the name itself, is demonstrated on the one hand by the ground clearance of 190 mm , the front approach angle of 18 degrees and the crossing angle of 25 degrees, on the other hand by the turning radius of 10.72 meters.

The propulsion will be provided by a pair of Energy dCi diesel engines equipped with the Stop&Start system and meeting the Euro 6b emission standard or a 12-litre TCe petrol engine . The weaker diesel engine has an output of 110 hp and, in combination with a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed dual-clutch EDC automatic , consumes only 3.8 l/100 km ! The more powerful four-cylinder diesel has 130 hp and 320 Nm, and its power is then transmitted to the front or all wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. The turbocharged 12-litre TCe with direct injection has an output of 130 hp at 5,500 rpm and a torque of 205 Nm from 2,000 rpm. If you are looking for a way to save as much fuel as possible, maybe the Renault Driving eco2 package with active flaps in the air intakes or a wind deflector around the fenders will be of interest to you. The result is a saving of up to 0.62 liters of fuel per 100 km, or 4 g of CO2/km at 130 km/h.
