Range Rover is the first car manufacturer to use a nine-speed automatic

A few years ago it was just a dream, but today it is a reality. What am I talking about? Well, about the automatic transmission, which has nine steps . In this way, even the previous peak was surpassed – i.e. eight degrees. How far can technology go?

The first serially produced and installed nine-speed automatic transmission was developed by the German company ZF . The first car company that dared to apply this solution is the British Range Rover , which uses this transmission in the smallest Evoque model with all-wheel drive .

The automaker boasts that the transmission is only 6 mm longer and 7.5 kg lighter than the six-speed automatic it is supposed to replace. More stages should bring significant fuel savings and a reduction in the amount of CO2 emissions emitted.

The gears are also much closer together than the old automatic, which should improve shift quality, throttle response and reduce noise at higher speeds. The very short number one is intended to replace the reduction gearbox in the Evoque, the long number nine will play a role in reducing operating costs.

A special feature of the new transmission is the adaptive shifting system . Thanks to special software, the latter can record the driver's gearing preferences and then adapt it to his taste.
