Peugeot 205 Electric

For many years, individual car companies have been thinking about what to replace cars with classic internal combustion engines . Some bet on hydrogen , others on air , and others on electricity . And it is the development of electric cars that currently seems to be the furthest and at the same time closest to mass production. Compared to the values of current electric cars, it may seem that the Peugeot 205 Électrique from the nineties presented today was ahead of its time.

At first glance, it looks like a regular 205 . From the one with a classic combustion engine, the electric version differs perhaps only in the designation on the C-pillar and slightly different wheels.

However, there is no gasoline or diesel engine under the hood, but twelve nickel-iron batteries with a voltage of 6V and a capacity of 232 Ah. These batteries drive an electric motor with a modest power of 8 kW , while charging them at a current of 16 Amps takes 10 hours.

The data on maximum speed and range are interesting. At a constant speed of 40 km/h, the 205 Électrique has a range of 200 km , if you increase your constant speed to 70 km/h, you can travel a distance of 140 km . The maximum speed of the electric 205 is then 100 km/h. These are, with today's range and speed of some electric cars of the same size, numbers like from the realm of dreams.

In addition to a long range, the electric 205 also had other interesting features. For example, the regenerative braking system , which works on a similar principle as in the new Renault Zoe. It means that during the deceleration phase, the kinetic energy is converted into electrical energy, which is then further stored in the batteries, which thus stay charged longer.

Despite all the batteries, the 205 retained good carrying capacity as well as agility. The total weight of the car is 850 kg (of which only 300 kg is the battery ), five passengers fit inside, and the luggage compartment can also fit quite a few suitcases.

So, do you still think that current electric cars are the pinnacle of automotive technology?
