Motoring mistakes – Skoda 1203

The time has come for the next part of the Motoring Mistakes series. This time, in the new part, we will look at the teeth of the only van that our biggest car company Skoda ever produced. It was originally designed in the second half of the 1950s, but then endless protracted struggles and changes followed, so that the final version did not reach the production lines until 1968. As was the Skoda tradition, the utility vehicle was produced in a number of variants. There was a minibus , which carried 7 passengers in addition to the driver, a van for a crew of three and more cargo, a combination car for 5 people and less cargo, an ambulance , a hearse with a special step in the transmission for funeral processions, a residential version and also a version with a cabin for assembly with purpose-built attachments (flatbed, box, tow truck or motorhome. A big flaw in the beauty was the weak 1.2 liter 33 kW engine, which was located behind the front wheels and drove the rear axle. Also, the drum brakes on all wheels were not ideal. However, some may be surprised by the independent suspension of all wheels. After five years, flatbed production was moved to Trnava , where the car was produced under the TAZ brand. In 1977, the production of all other versions was moved from Vrchlabí to Slovakia. The Slovak TAZ 1203 M received a more powerful engine by power of 42 kW, it was later to be replaced by the utility vehicle BAZ M8 and then an even more modern type developed together with the Moskvich automobile company. However, this never happened. In 1993, the car was produced packaged as a TAZ 1500 , the last years of production before the end saw the Volkswagen 1.9 moto. In 1999, production in Trnava was stopped, but now you can buy a new twelve-three from the Czech manufacturer Ocelot .
