Motoring mistakes – Renault Dauphine

Renault Dauphine

The Dauphine was first presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1954. This car replaced the successful Renault 4CV model. The Dauphine was assembled in a newly built factory in Flins , 40 km from Paris. Compared to its predecessor, the car offered more interior space and higher engine power. The sports version was prepared by Amedée Gordini , which fans will remember especially in connection with the Renault 8 , 12 and 17 types. The Dauphine Gordini with a modified engine reached a speed of 130 km/h and the Dauphine 1093 version even 140 km/h. At the end of the 1950s, the sports versions of the Dauphine also won several victories at the Monte Carlo Rally or the Tour de Corse . In addition to France, it was produced in 10 other countries and could also be purchased under the Alfa Romeo brand. The elegant Renault Dauphine Floride cabriolet was also created on the chassis of the car. Although a sales success, the classic Dauphine was criticized for poor build quality, low engine power and corrosion problems
