Mercedes-Benz E 2013 – More than a facelift

On Tuesday , the first pictures of the facelifted Mercedes-Benz E-Class were released. Now the Stuttgart automaker has officially released a complete press release, which also allows a look under the hood of the model.

But first, let's take a closer look at the design of the model . By far the biggest change is the loss of the twin headlights. These have been replaced by classic, one-piece ones, which are equipped with LEDs for daytime lighting and can be completely made of LEDs for an additional fee! In addition to the lights, the modernized "E" will also offer a dual front design. The Elegance version gets a simpler, three-slat radiator grille and a less sporty bumper. The emblem of the car company is then placed on the hood. If you desire a sporty look, go for the Avantgarde version . It will offer a sportier mask with the car company's logo in the middle, as well as a bumper with larger air intakes. In the rear of the car, work was done on the bumper and also on the composition of the headlights. These are now also equipped with LEDs and have a two-tone finish.

Changes from the outside are opposed to changes from the inside . There aren't as many of them as you might expect in contrast to the exterior design. The carmaker itself draws attention mainly to higher quality materials and workmanship. In addition to the processing, however, work was done on the appearance of the strip that runs along the entire length of the dashboard, on the appearance of the ventilation outlets, an analog clock was also added, and the car's alarm clocks also underwent minor changes.

The main technological innovation is the introduction of a stereoscopic camera (Mercedes calls it the Stereo Multi-Purpose Camera ). It uses two image inputs to scan the space up to 500 meters in front of the car at an angle of 45 degrees and is able to create a 3D map that shows the environment up to 50 meters in front of the vehicle. This mainly helps other safety systems in the car, which react better to the given situation.

No stone was left unturned under the hood! From now on, the basic unit is a turbocharged two-liter in the E 200 version with an output of 184 hp . Above it stands the E 250 version with the same engine but with 211 hp . The next level are the E 300 models or E 350 with an atmospheric three-and-a-half-liter six-cylinder and a power of 252 or 306 horses . Both can be optionally equipped with 4Matic all-wheel drive. The next step is the new, twin-turbo six-cylinder 3.0 with 333 horsepower in the E 400 version. It can also be combined with 4Matic all-wheel drive. The E 500 versions, with a twin-turbocharged 4.6 V8 and 408 hp , and the E 63 AMG with a 5.5 V8 and two turbos remain the top of the range. The E 500 can also be equipped with all-wheel drive.

Compared to gasoline engines, diesel units received almost no modifications. The basis is the E 200 CDI version with a 2.1 four-cylinder engine and 136 horsepower . The same engine is also offered in the E 220 CDI and E 250 CDI versions. Here, however, they have a power of 170 or 204 horses . All-wheel drive can also be purchased for the 250 CDI version. The more powerful versions of the E 300 BlueTEC and E 350 BlueTEC are equipped with a six-cylinder 3.0 and a power of 231 and 252 horses. The more powerful version can again be combined with all-wheel drive. A specialty in the engine program is the hybrid variant E 300 BlueTEC Hybrid . This version combines a 204 hp 2.1 four-cylinder engine with a 26 hp electric motor .
