Martin Tolar: Is driving a car an art?

The art of driving is an interesting phrase. Can this routine matter be considered art at all? And why couldn't she? After all, this is another form of movement. Just as many people go to admire the ballet, so I stand over the ditch in a sharp turn and try to catch a glimpse of the passes at our rally tip. I don't want a 200 hp beast with all-wheel drive at home, but it can't hurt to take a look at the choice of track, for example. And anyone who has ever seen Climb dance with Ari Vatanen probably experiences similar feelings. But we live in a time of prejudice. A number of drivers assume that only the number of kilometers driven or slow driving justifies the statement from the beginning of the article. But is it really so?

As a young adult, I really bragged that I could drive. A wet driver's license in my pocket warmed my self-confidence and in a month I was able to beat all the drivers in the wider area. Or so I thought. In addition, I was extremely lucky. The first stronger car passed and the managed unwanted skid threw me into incredible complacency. A weak car with very wide wheels forgave me any mistake. After a year I gained an extra 10 kW in a livelier machine and felt like the king of the roads. In came the pulling of the sleeve on gravel and snow, slashing the fenders in corners and dialing in third gear. One hand on the steering wheel, the other casually on the window, chewing gum in the mouth, sunglasses and very loud music, ugh, puberty is a really terrible time. The car felt sluggish after a while and I started looking for its limit. But somehow I forgot that I also have a limit and what had to come came. Redesigned aerodynamics on the car, although there are no scars on the body, but the wounds on the soul resembled Macocha. This was followed by frustration and self-confession that I really can't drive.

But skepticism turned into a determination to change. I decided not to underestimate the condition of the car and components, which is also an important aspect of quality driving. After all, a good driver knows his car and takes care of it. But I also started to notice how my heroes from erzet drive. They don't teach about the correct posture behind the wheel and how to hold it in driving schools for nothing. Ideal revolutions, smooth driving and efficiency are not empty concepts. I suddenly stopped caring about speed, but still I started driving faster. Fuel consumption has decreased, tires wear less and I find myself in crisis situations less often. And it certainly won't be because the situation on the roads is better. So I could already drive? Definitely not yet!

I have no problem driving cars that I know, both briskly and economically. However, it is not easy for me to really use the car's capabilities. But it takes me longer to get used to an unfamiliar car. In addition, I probably have no idea about the limits of my current car. I assumed I had a rough idea of where they might be, but a more experienced driver proved to me that they were much further away and with my current abilities I certainly shouldn't be trying to find them. I could turn out badly again, maybe even worse this time.

Self study and determination is a great thing that works. But when it comes to practical matters, it is necessary to get rid of repetitive mistakes. You need to get advice. So I'm currently saving every paycheck from my part-time job to enroll in one of the proper sports driving courses. It is simply necessary to take the next step in learning. I hope that this determination will remain with me, so that even at fifty and having circled the globe a hundred times on the speedometer, I can say that I am still learning and improving, that I simply have the motivation.

Perhaps many drivers will not go through a similar stage, perhaps you are one of the luckier ones who have sense before a plastic pink card. But I basically only learn from mistakes and mistakes in life. What about you, can you drive? Or are you still "just learning" too?
