Infiniti expands Sunderland plant

The production of Infiniti in Europe is taking concrete dimensions. The production plant in Sunderland, UK, is awaiting a significant expansion to record capacity. The new production area dedicated to the production of the first ever Infiniti cars in Europe will be 25,000 m 2 and will include a body shop and a finishing assembly line.

The factory expansion is part of Infiniti 's previously announced £250 million investment, which will create more than a thousand new jobs in the automotive industry in the UK. The Q30 Concept , which will be revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show next week, represents a design vision for future Infiniti models produced in Europe.

"The Q30 Concept represents the next step in the Infiniti brand's expansion into new premium car segments – and the production car will fully live up to the concept's promise," said Fintan Knight , Infiniti's Vice President for Europe. "The compact car segment is key to our future expansion plans and the decision to invest and manufacture cars in the UK further underlines our long-term commitment to Europe."

Construction work on the Sunderland manufacturing site is expected to begin within the next few weeks. Kevin Fitzpatrick , Nissan 's UK Manufacturing Vice President said: “Manufacturing Infiniti begins a new chapter for our company in Sunderland. The Q30 concept represents a new direction for this premium segment and the Infiniti brand as such. In addition, the expansion will significantly contribute to expanding not only our production capacity, but also our entire supply chain.”

The latest phase of expansion at the Sunderland plant will begin after it confirmed its position as the UK's largest ever manufacturer in 2012 when it exceeded 500,000 vehicles. Production will begin in 2015 , making Infiniti the first new car brand to be produced on this scale in the UK in 23 years. Nissan's factory in Sunderland, UK, was chosen for the production of the new Infiniti model because of its high productivity and quality of work , which it has been achieving for many years. The new model will thus meet the highest standards of the Infiniti brand for the premium market.
