How to restore a steel wheel

Steel discs are still a classic today. And that's because of its several positive features, where today we can include, for example, certainties associated with the fact that the discs in question offer a low price, a long service life and high durability. Of course, the most important thing is that we take care of them in a sufficient way. How to do it? The procedure is not as complicated as it may seem. The basis is certainly both regular and sufficient cleaning. Furthermore, it can be just the renovation of steel discs. It doesn't have to be complicated either. Thanks to this, it is possible to significantly improve their very appearance, and logically it is also possible to significantly extend their lifespan.

What is the first step?

If the renovation of the steel discs is to be done really sufficiently and correctly, the first necessary step must be taken first. It's not just that we take them off the car. Of course, the tires themselves also need to be removed. This is also why we recommend renovating, for example, when we change the tires as such, because their current model is no longer suitable. If we have them, it is the perfect time to carry out the given renovation in a fairly simple way.

As part of the preparations, we must not forget that it is ideal to first clean them of any impurities. There is no need to think about any complexities here, as even this procedure can be quite simple. If we look at it more specifically, it is enough to wash it with a strong stream of water, thanks to which all impurities are removed very easily and efficiently.

The first step is sandblasting

A method that is associated both with the fact that surface impurities are removed, but is also associated with the fact that the surface paint is simply removed. This generally used method is based on the principle that a mixture of water and sand or other material is sprayed onto the discs under a strong current. This will ensure that the material is simply treated by removing paint residues, but also corrosion or anything else that shouldn't be on the disc. Today, thanks to many rental companies, it is not a problem to manage everything at home, by yourself. It is also possible to visit specialized branches for this purpose.

Corrosion protection

Once the sandblasting is over, the disc itself must be thoroughly rinsed with a stream of clean water. If even this step is over, everything must be allowed to dry sufficiently. Only then is everything ready for the next stage of renovating the steel discs. This phase is naturally associated with corrosion protection. This must not be underestimated, as it is precisely the absence of corrosion that significantly extends the life of steel discs.

If we look at the ideal procedure to protect discs against corrosion, we can definitely say that it is not at all complicated or demanding and can definitely be done by anyone. To be a little more specific, the main step is to use the right color. And what should it be? It is a base color, but it should have an anti-corrosion finish. Thanks to this, we are sure that the discs will really receive the protection and care that they need and will continue to need for a real life extension.

Next is a layer of filler

If the base color is sprayed on the disc, you need to wait until it dries. Here, of course, it depends on the specific type of paint and its manufacturer. Information may vary, but it is definitely best to wait a few hours. Specific information about the drying itself can be obtained on the can of paint itself, where the time range is precisely indicated. If we want to speed up the drying of the paint, the best procedure is that the disk is placed in a place where there is sufficient air flow, but at the same time we do not have to worry about possible dirt here.

Once the base color is dry, the next step can follow. This is nothing more than a layer of so-called filler. This is certainly a very important step that we should always take if our interest is to renovate steel discs. After the filler layer is on the disc itself, we wait for it to dry again. We then have a choice of two possible paths. The first is simpler and consists in the fact that the disk is already fully prepared for the next phase. The second way is associated with light sanding, ideally with water paper. In this case, we recommend two variants, namely 400 and 1,000. These are the ones that will thoroughly sand the entire disc. After that, they are ready for the last, we can say that basically the cosmetic phase of the entire renovation, which will definitively end all our efforts and give them the right appearance and quality.

Final color

The renovation of the steel discs is almost over. Only the last step is enough, which is nothing more than the need to apply the final color. It is ideal to spray paint, which of course will bring a perfect result combined with a good appearance. However, paint does not necessarily have to be the last layer, as we should not forget that varnish can also be used. This is also a possible way to give the discs the perfect look they deserve after years of use.

Back to the car

As soon as the final paint is definitely dry, only the last step is needed, which is related to putting on the tire. Ideally, the new ones. Subsequently, let's not forget the next necessary step, which requires balancing. After this step, we can simply mount the refurbished steel discs where they belong. That is, on the car itself. They can not only significantly improve its appearance, but are also quite naturally connected with the certainty that they will serve again for several longer years without any problems. After that, we can renovate them again and give them a pleasant and perfect look again.
