Honda can recognize an approaching traffic jam!

The Japanese car manufacturer Honda was the first in the world to develop technology capable of recognizing the risk of traffic jams and preventing them. Tests on public roads began in mid-May.

The company has announced the successful development of the world's first technology that can detect the threat of traffic jams and determine whether a vehicle's driving style can cause a traffic jam. Honda developed this technology knowing that the acceleration and deceleration of one vehicle affects the way other vehicles drive behind it, which can lead to traffic congestion.

In collaboration with the Research Center for Science and Technology at the University of Tokyo, Honda has conducted experimental testing of a system using technology to detect the threat of traffic jams. The test results showed that the system helped increase the average speed by around 23% and reduced the consumption of the vehicles behind by 8%.

In order to bring this technology to market, Honda began testing it on public roads in Italy and Indonesia in mid-May. The aim of the trials will be to verify the effectiveness of the technology in minimizing traffic collapses.

Instead of providing traffic information that allows the driver to avoid complications on the road, the system monitors the typical acceleration and deceleration of the vehicle to determine whether the driver's behavior in this direction may contribute to the creation of a traffic jam. Based on the evaluated data, the system provides the driver with relevant information in order to contribute to the smoothness of the drive, which will help smooth out the intensity of acceleration and braking of vehicles moving backwards, thus preventing or minimizing the risk of traffic jams.
