History Saab 900

We did have the chance to test the Swedish beauty live, right in the most attractive version of the 900 Turbo Aero . But it still deserves a few words in the history section. Saabs from the late 70s and 80s are loved by a lot of petrolheads, including my little one. Torque, turbo lag, electrical equipment and amazing seats are all typical features of these Swedish elegance. And it is the 900 Turbo model that will forever be probably the most remembered model.

The Type 900 came on the market in 1978 and replaced the Type 99 . In its time, it was called the first modern Saab . The new 900 was even better in every way. Well, she was also heavier, which is not always a good thing. The larger dimensions and sophistication were definitely a step forward. The choice was a two- and four-door sedan or a three- and five-door hatchback. There was also a two-door cabriolet that was the greatest success in the USA.

A lot of pre-rolls from that era are like vegan burgers. But the Saab 900 had much more style than several Italian super sports of the time combined. a lot of people didn't mind the "bad" front axle drive at all. After all, they had to get used to this in the Type 99. But here the engine was installed at an angle of 45° and was placed as far back as possible. And even the magic word Transaxle cannot be omitted when describing the Saab 900.

The 900 was very ergonomic. Whether we think of the curved windshield facilitating the view from the car or the placement of all switches and controls according to the frequency of their use, everything has been subordinated to the best driving experience. Saab also still flaunted its aircraft design, you could literally find the phrase "born from fighters" in the brochures. With the type 900 , this slogan did not have such a convulsive effect as with later creations created under the wings of the GM concern.

After modernization in 1985, the somewhat lazy eight-valve units (this was not the case for the Turbo version, however) were replaced by more modern sixteen- valve units. The turbo had a new 175 horsepower and reached 100 in 8 seconds. The maximum speed was over 200 km/h. These don't sound like high numbers today, but it was a fast car for its time.

The 900 is just getting on course, it is becoming a sought-after veteran (with the exception of the Turbo version, which has been rising on the price curve for several years), which also successfully fulfills the function of a regular means of transport. It is still as universal and usable as at the time of its creation.
