The Ford Ka is the smallest member of the car company. Its second generation has been produced since 2008 in cooperation with the FIAT concern. It is sold only in the European market and currently the Ford brand is deciding on its future.
In reality, the "Duck" is a Fiat 500 in disguise, from which it shares a platform, with Ford only altering the body and interior to distinguish it from the Fiat. The second generation is assembled in the same plant as the Italian city car, i.e. in Polish Tychy. Under the hood of the small Ford , we even find an Italian 1.3 Multi-Jet engine, which looks like a Duratorq power unit.
According to an inside source, Ford has two options to choose from to get the third-generation Ka on the road. The first one is the renewal of the contract with Fiat for the next generation and the use of a platform from it again, specifically from the modernized 500 . With this move, Ford would save time and costs, as the production lines are shared with the Italian carmaker. However, it is not certain, because the second generation Ford Ka is not as successful as the first one, which continues to be sold in South America after the facelift.
The second option is to use a lighter B-platform and build it from the ground up. Thus, Ford can correct the future of its small model as it likes, but again spend more money on production and development. We will learn more detailed information about the chosen platform and motorization for the new generation only next year.
Ford is also working on a small city car at a technical center in China that would slot in under the Fiesta for the emerging market, but no further details have yet been revealed. If we look back, the automaker has also turned the EcoSport small SUV into a global model. Perhaps something similar could happen in the case of a city car, which could be called Figo and reach the European market, where it would replace the current Ford Ka .
