BMW showed a plug-in hybrid 3 Series prototype

The BMW 3 Series is currently available with a classic hybrid drive under the designation ActiveHybrid 3. However, a more modern solution in the form of a plug-in hybrid will come along with the facelift next year. The first prototype was revealed by the Munich car company at the brand event Group Innovation Days .

Under the hood is a two-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with turbocharging, which is partnered by an electric motor . The total output of the system is 245 hp and 400 Nm, which, in combination with the eight-speed Steptronic automatic , is enough for a consumption of 2 l/100 km (CO2 emissions at the level of 50 g/km) and the dynamics of a "three" series with a classic six-cylinder.

Purely on electricity, the sedan can travel 35 km at a maximum speed of 120 km/h. Lithium-ion batteries installed under the floor of the luggage compartment take care of the electric motor's energy supply. As is customary with plug-in hybrids, they can also be recharged through the home electrical network . In addition to the new drive and already modified appearance, which is hidden behind the camouflage, the 3 Series Plug-in hybrid also offers the Driving Experience system . This is controlled by a rotary control on the center console and switches between Comfort, Sport and Eco Pro modes. All three adjust the settings of the chassis, transmission and hybrid system.
