BMW is sending the plug-in hybrid X5 into production

A year and a half ago, BMW presented the X5 eDrive concept , which is nothing more than a two-ton SUV (sorry, according to BMW it's an SAV) with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Just a few days after the premiere of the equally focused Audi Q7 e-tron quattro , the Munich propeller comes with a series version of the aforementioned concept, only called X5 xDrive40e .

Of course, the main difference from the standard X5 lies in the drive unit, consisting of a two-liter TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder and an electric motor. The combustion engine has 245 hp and 350 Nm, the electric motor built into the eight-speed Steptronic transmission has 113 hp and 250 Nm, and the 2230 kg SAV has a total of 313 hp and 450 Nm . With both engines running, the X5 accelerates to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds, has a limited top speed of 210 km/h and consumes 3.3-3.4 l/100 km. Thanks to the 9 kWh lithium-ion batteries under the floor of the luggage compartment (which has 500-1720 litres), the BMW can travel 31 km cleanly without emissions at a maximum speed of 120 km/h. In both cases, power is transmitted to all wheels using the xDrive system

Recharging the batteries takes 3 hours and 50 minutes using the standard home network, or 2 hours and 45 minutes using the optional BMW i Wallbox . Thanks to the eDrive button, the driver can choose one of three driving modes – Auto eDrive (both engines work together), Max eDrive (the X5 runs purely on electricity) and Save Battery (conserving energy or recharging the batteries through recuperation). From the classic versions of the SAV comes the second Experience Control driving mode selector, which works in combination with all the above-mentioned modes in Comfort, Sport and Eco Pro modes. The chassis already includes rear air suspension and active shock absorbers as standard. In appearance, the xDrive40e differs only through specific 18-inch wheels with 255/55 R18 tires, or a socket for connecting the car to the electrical network behind the front wheels. In the interior, in addition to a specific driving mode selector, there is also a multimedia system with Professional navigation and various applications specific to hybrid cars. The optional equipment includes the sporty M package or the BMW Individual package.
