Nowadays, the safety of the crew always comes first. Every car offers a range of airbags and electronic assistants, but some people require an even higher level of protection. For them, there is a segment of armored cars , in which a new player is coming in the form of the BMW X5 Security Plus .
Although this is referred to as a concept (the full name is BMW Concept X5 Security Plus ), BMW intends to introduce almost the same car to the regular world. The biggest boast of the model is the VR6 level protection provided , which is said to be offered by no other car in the segment. To put this level a bit closer to you, the X5 should be able to withstand an attempted forcible assault or kidnapping.
The basis of the model is a structure made of high-strength steel , which covers the joints from where bullets could enter the car and which is supposed to offer maximum protection to the four passengers. As an example of what the armored X5 has to withstand, the Bavarian automaker cites an AK-47 assault at close range.
The drive is provided by a twin-turbocharged eight-cylinder engine with an output of 450 hp in combination with xDrive all-wheel drive. BMW adapted the chassis, on-board electronics and brakes to the higher weight of the entire SUV.
In addition to this model with VR6 protection, BMW is also developing an X5 with a lower degree of VR4 protection . This version should withstand normal street crime.
