BMW has upgraded the units under the hood of the 5 Series

The BMW 5 Series underwent a slight modernization last year and is currently in its fifth season on the market, and the successor cannot be far away. For the last few years of sales, the Munich automaker equipped its representative of the upper middle class with two significantly modernized diesels .

Well, modernized – the four-cylinder engines under the hoods of the 518d and 520d versions are almost completely new. Both have an aluminum crankcase with thermally bonded inserts to optimize internal engine friction . The oil pump control map was also changed, the supercharging system uses variable vane geometry, and the Common Rail injection system can now handle a pressure of up to 2000 bar.

The result is 150 hp for the 518d version and 190 hp for the 520d version . With a weaker engine, this means acceleration to 100 km/h in 9.1 seconds for the sedan, or 9.5 seconds for the station wagon, and consumption of 4.3 – 4.7 l/100 km for the sedan , respectively 4.6 – 5.0 l/100 km for station wagon . For the more powerful unit, a slight boost means acceleration to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds for the sedan, or 8.1 seconds for the estate, and consumption of 4.1-4.7 l/100 km for the sedan, or 4.5-5, respectively 0 l/100 km for the station wagon.

The 520d is also available with xDrive all-wheel drive . This configuration means, compared to the two-wheeler, the same acceleration values for the sedan and 0.1 s worse acceleration for the station wagon and a combined consumption of 4.7 – 5.1 l/100 km for the sedan and 5.1 – 5.4 l/100 km for a station wagon.
